The river in it upper course flows in a highly circuitous route, meandering through the swamp lowlands between the ridge hills of rural and suburban northern New Jersey, draining much of the northern portion of the state through its tributaries.
Starting in the late 18th century, the river was highly significant in the early industrial development of New Jersey, providing a navigable route connected by canals to the Delaware River.
In particular the stretch of the river along downtown Newark came to be regarded in the later decades of the 20th century as particularly wretched.

The river was named for the trees that dominated the moist land along its banks, and the name was expanded to include the meadows and forests surrounding it.
Whippany was once a rather sizable territory when it was known as Whippenny Township and it has the distinct honor of being the original name of all of the land now known as Morris County.

Nearly a decade later the Whippany and Passaic River Railroad was established to create a seven-mile extension connecting with the Roseland Railway, a branch of the Erie in Essex Fells.
Subsequently the Whippany River and Whippany and Passaic companies were consolidated to form the eleven-mile long Morristown and Erie Railroad Company, which operates freight lines to this day.

The Whippany River is a tributary of the Rockaway River, approximately 20 mi (32 km) long, in northern New Jersey in the United States.
It rises in Morris County, in Mendham Township west of Morristown, and flows generally ENE in a meandering course, through Morristown and Whippany.
It flows through the Troy Meadows and joins the Rockaway in the Hatfield Swamp in eastern Morris County, just above the confluence of the Rockaway with the Passaic River.
