Whippet Mk A - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Whippets arrived late in the First World war at a time the whole British Army, crippled by the losses in Flanders, was quite inactive.
Whippets were then assigned to the normal Tank Battalions as extra "X-companies" as an expedience.
The Whippets broke through into the German rear areas causing the loss of the artillery in an entire front sector, a devastating blow from which the Germans were unable to recover.

Information and photos on the Mk A "Whippet" WW1 Tank
Whippets were first used in action near Herbetune in northern France in March 1918, but the tanks really came to the fore in August the same year when some 90 of them were used during the Battle for Amiens.
The Whippet had poor trench-crossing capability, but with it's 13-14 km/h the Whippet WAS faster than the other tanks, and when used in the role it was originally intended for, it could make quite an impression.
One such Whippet, "Musical Box", belonging to B Coy, 6th Battalion, commanded by lieutenant CB Arnold, took part in the big attack on August 8, 1918, overtook the slow Mk V:s, routed a German Artillery Battery and on it's own penetrated to the rear of the German lines.

The Medium Tank Mk A was manned by a crew of three or four and powered by two Tylor four-cylinder petrol engines providing a top speed of 13.4 kmh and a range of 257 km.
The Mk F3 was bassed on an AMX-13 tank chassis mounting a 155 mm gun with a maximum range of 21.5 km, and manned by a crew of ten, two carried in the Mk F3 and a further eight in a separate carrier.

When the French deployed their FT light tanks and later the British their Medium A "Whippets" with success on the battlefield, the German tank arm was want to duplicate what the Allies had (as they sought to do with the Mk.
Unlike the "Whippet" whose fuel tank was located right at the front of the vehicle, the LK I had its in the very rear of the tank.
Where the "Whippet" did prove the better of the LK II was in the range of action, nearly double what the LK II could muster.

 Whippet Profiles
Designed as a 'fast' tank capable of exploiting any breakthroughs, the Whippet was used to great effect during the battle of Amiens in 1918.
The first British tanks carried no national markings of any kind as they were un-needed (the Germans had no tanks of their own design until early 1918).
According to Hundleby and Strasheim they captured two Whippets, after extensive testing these were discarded as not being necessary as the similiar German LK II was under construction - ultimately only two of 580 LK IIs ordered were completed.

The Whippet was also used in the Russian Civil War, first by the Whites (as the model above), and later, when captured, by the Red Army.
It has been painted to portary a Whippet in White Army service during the Russian Civil War, specifically the tank A371 "Sphinx", that was employed in the great attack on the Kakhova bridgehead in early september 1920, and that was captured there by the Reds, after being knocked out by artillery.
It is made up to represent a generic Whippet, as seen on the west front in 1918.

They are most remembered for their role in August of that year at Amiens when 96 Whippets were assigned to the Cavalry Corps, earning it the simile of "Cavalry Tank", and demonstrating that the days of the unarmored vehicle had passed.
Also, the small armored gas tank limited the Whippet's range to only 40 miles, which was not good for a tank which was meant to penetrate far into enemy lines.
There has been some debate on the color of the Whippet; some say it was grayish, some say brownish, some say greenish.

The Medium Mark B was a British tank of the First World War developed as a successor to the Whippet, but ultimately unsatisfactory and production was cancelled at the end of World War 1.
The Whippet was a successful design and proved effective but suffered from a lack of power, complex steering and unsprung suspension.
The design by Wilson had elements of both the Mark I and the Whippet; a similar but smaller tracked rhomboid chassis of the former and fixed turret like the latter.

March 20 2004, 10:48 AM The only ones I can comment on are the Accurate Armour Whippet tracks, which come as a number of separate links plus several long lengths, all in resin.
Other than that, the tracks look accurate to me, and the set also comes with a full set of grouser blocks to hang onto the tank, which look very good, too.
March 22 2004, 11:06 AM The standard track width for the Whippet and the rhomboid tracks (the same track) should scale out to 21" in width, the Model cellar tracks scale out to 19" and it is noticable in scale, though I can't say that some actual tracks weren't 19".
