The Zoological Society of London had hoped for great things, claiming the new Whipsnade herd of Asian elephants was the largest in the UK, and that the integration of the six females with Emmett, the bull elephant, would play an important role in the European captive breeding programme (EEP) and the conservation of the species.
Five female elephants and one bull elephant remain at Whipsnade Wild Animal Park and despite the evidence that elephants do not breed well in captivity and the recent losses, ZSL still intend to try and breed elephants at Whipsnade.
