The practice of Sufi whirling, a whirling meditation, originated among the ancient Indian Sufis (and is still practiced by modern Turkish Dervishes).
The whirling is done on the spot in an anticlockwise direction, with the right arm held high, palm upwards, and the left arm held low, palm downwards.
When the whirler is whirling so fast that he or she cannot remain upright, his or her body will fall by itself.

The dervish order was founded in the city, then the capital of the Turkish Seljuk empire, by Mevlana's son after the poet's death in 1273.
The ``sema'' whirling dervish ceremony is performed publicly in Konya only during one week of the year, to mark Mevlana's death seven centuries ago.
The dervishes say they come close to a direct understanding of divinity at the peak of the ceremony but slowly halt the dance to avoid committing the Moslem sin of ``shirk,'' putting yourself, another being or an object on a par with God.

The Whirling Dervish ritual ceremony was created by Rumi's son, Sultan Veled, as a way of honouring the passing of his father, who had immersed himself in whirling and writing spiritual poetry.

For the 'wedding night' ceremony of the remembrance of Rumi's passing, a white gown is worn, reminiscent of the burial shroud, with a bonnet symbolic of a tombstone, and a belt that separates the lower chakras from the higher.

Their path is an attempt to transcend the ego and achieve unity with the divine, with the help of a sheikh (also called pir) and of prayer, meditation and, in the case of the whirling dervishes, dancing.

 Whirling Dervishes (Mevlevi) in Turkey
The sema (seh-MAH) is derived from Rumî's habit of occasionally whirling in ecstatic joy in the streets of Konya, capital of the Seljuk Turkish Sultanate of Rum, and his home for the greater part of his life.
Though all dervish orders were closed shortly after the foundation of the Turkish Republic, the Mevlevi were soon allowed to reform as a "cultural organization," perhaps because they were not overtly political and reactionary as were some other orders.
However, you may also be able to witness whirling, and perhaps even a proper sema, in Konya near (but not in) the Mevlana Museum: a modern shopping-and-restaurant complex near the museum arranges whirling sometimes.
