A whirlpool is a large, swirling body of water produced by ocean tides.
Very small whirlpools can be easily seen when a bath or a sink is draining, but these are produced in a very different manner from those in nature.
Powerful whirlpools have killed unlucky seafarers, but their power tends to be exaggerated in fiction.

 Digest - perldoc.perl.org
An important property of the digest algorithms is that the digest is likely to change if the message change in some way.
Note that the properties of the algorithms change over time, as the algorithms are analyzed and machines grow faster.
If your application for instance depends on it being "impossible" to generate the same digest for a different message it is wise to make it easy to plug in stronger algorithms as the one used grow weaker.

This file claims to be a rewrite of the perl algorithm (or the original C algorihtm below that?) in Python and it looks identical to the perl one (and is more readable).
This code allows for newer algorithms to be added as needed with no difficulties, by simply modifying the set_password function and adding a new check to check_password.
Today this is SHA1 (mostly because of builtin-ness), but by making the algorithm name a part of the hash, you can provide multi-algorithm support and backwards compatibility can be mantained, with algorithm migration made transparent to the users, whose hashes get updated when they successfully log in.

 Standard Cryptographic Algorithm Naming
An algorithm is "little-bit-endian" if the least significant bit of each byte is first in the corresponding bit string, or "big-bit-endian" if the most significant bit is first.
If an algorithm processes a message by converting it to words larger than 8 bits internally, then it is "little-byte-endian" if the least significant byte of each word is first in the corresponding byte string, or "big-byte-endian" if the most significant byte is first.

The number of steps that are necessary to factorize a large number using all known algorithms increases exponentially with the size of the number.
The algorithm employs quite elementary arithmetic and is stated by the authors in just 13 lines.
The important new feature of the algorithm is that the time taken to test the primality of a number N increases polynomially with the size of N rather than exponentially.

 SPIE Proceedings Vol. 2094b
Experimental results are presented which demonstrate that the proposed regularized algorithms yield reconstructed images with superior quality, both visually and using objective distance metrics, to that of traditional decoders that use only the transmitted transform coefficients.
A sequential iterative decoding algorithm is extended from 1D to 2D to perfectly reconstruct the image from estimation residuals at the decoder.
Since the investigated algorithms are selected from different technique groups, this study also shows that the presented approach would be valid and effective for treating a wide range of segmentation algorithms.

If an algorithm is provided by your JRE, Jacksum is just calling the API and use the algorithm which is offered by the JRE.

Slashdot | Practical Exploits of Broken MD5 Algorithm
The exploits mentioned above are that the algorithms (MD5 and to some extent SHA-1) have been broken to allow you to construct a piece of data which hashes to the same value as the original.
As a general rule of thumb, it is wise to use an algorithm that has been seriously studied for 10-20 years.
And to think that they're still working on getting MD5 digests in TCP packets...the algorithm could be as useless as the checksums they currently use by the time this change would have become widely accepted (now it's probably never going to happen).

Of course, this is just as I revised my old article on PHP Cryptography to include a footnote on the MD5 section that SHA-1 is now the preferred hashing algorithm for security purposes.
The truth is that while collisions may be bad news for verifying the absolute pristine uniqueness of data via a signature, many of the ways that SHA-1 and even MD5 are used in the PHP world are unlikely to be seriously affected by these vulnerabilities.
