  Niagara New York State Parks
Buckhorn Island State Park, 895 acres of marsh, meadows and woods and the last vestige of once vast marshlands and meadows that bordered the Niagara River, is classified as a park preserve.
Currently, the park is undergoing restoration to re-establish wetland cover and water levels and increase the diversity of native flora and fauna.
The park's 633 acres are comprised of a variety of habitats, including 400 acres of grasslands (pastures and hayfields), and 100 acres of woodlands, ponds and several wetland areas.

The depth of the Whirlpool Rapids is 10.7 meters (35 feet) and the speed of the water at the Whirlpool Rapids is 35.4 km/hr (22 mph).
The speed is the result of the narrow width of the gorge, the rapid descent of the river and the volume of water (100,000 cubic feet per second).
The Whirlpool State Park allow the more adventurous visitor to follow a series of stairways and paths to the base of the gorge.

Situated just a few miles north of the mighty cataracts, Whirlpool State Park is an oasis from the desert storm of high admission and parking fees that surround the direct falls area.
Free parking and no admission fee are not words often uttered in Niagara Falls, but they are apt descriptors for this lovely park.
Throw in the breathtaking views of a whirlpool the size of six football fields around and the stunning Niagara Gorge and we're talking about an outlook that deserves to be called a natural gem.

 The Great Waves
We started from the upstream end of the gorge at the Niagara Aquarium and hiked down abandoned roads and trails into the gorge under the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge and then dropped down to the edge of the river just north of the bridge.
Downstream from the Whirlpool, the trail is quite well traveled and after about 1/2 mile comes to a long stone stairway (built by the CCC during the Great Depression) to the rim.
This is a great hike if you want to see a part of Niagara Falls which missed by the tourists, and if you want to really see and feel the awesome power of lots of moving water.

After parking your car you can then walk freely around the Falls area on the American side, which is an extremely pleasant park.

It is easy walking and there are places to stop and rest as you enter villages in the area and the many parks that are adjacent to the Canal.

The orange blaze path leads you down to the Whirlpool Sandstone and around the point near river level to the "flats." The pink blaze path leads you across a few rockfalls and onto the level of the old railbed.
