Tern - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Terns are seabirds in the family Sternidae, previously considered a subfamily Sterninae of the gull family Laridae.
Many terns breeding in temperate zones are long-distance migrants, and the Arctic Tern probably sees more daylight than any other creature, since it migrates from its northern breeding grounds to Antarctic waters.
Terns in the genus Sterna have deeply forked tails, those in Chlidonias and Larosterna shallowly forked tails, while the noddies (genera Anous, Procelsterna, Gygis) have unusual 'notched wedge' shaped tails, the longest tail feathers being the middle-outer, not the central nor the outermost.

The Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybridus) is a seabird of the tern family Sternidae.
As with other the other Chlidonias marsh terns, Black Tern and White-winged Black Tern, Whiskered Tern feeds on insects taken in flight, and not by plunge-diving for fish like the white Sterna terns.
The hybridus in the scientific name arises from the fact that this, the largest marsh tern, show similarities in appearance to both the white Sterna terns and to Black Tern.

Whiskered Tern colonies are located on floating vegetation of lagoons, marshes and shallow wetlands.
Whiskered Tern populations are highly unstable due to natural factors.
Wetland habitat loss through the drainage of marshes and the canalization of rivers, eutrophication, the reduction in the amount of emergent and floating vegetation and disturbance due to the increasing pressure of tourism and water-sports close to breeding colonies are the major threats to the species.

 Chlidonias hybridus
In summer plumage their fl cap and white cheeks makes them look more like Common Terns than Black Terns but they have the short, broad wings and tails typical of 'marsh terns' and their underparts are such a deep grey that the white cheeks stand out boldly.
In a Whiskered Tern, however, this saddle is paler, browner and is noticeably interrupted by pale scaly markings.
Also, the rump is not as conspicuously white as on a White-winged Black Tern and the wings of a Whiskered Tern are a more uniform grey.

 Chlidonias niger
The Black Tern is the commonest of the so-called 'marsh terns' which can be distinguished from other terns by their broader, more rounded wings, a fatter body, squarer tail and relatively shorter bill.
In summer, all the Marsh Terns have dark bodies, but Black Terns lack the white cheeks of a Whiskered Tern or the strikingly pale wings, rump and tail of a White-winged Black Tern.
In other plumages Black Terns are always more uniform especially across the upperparts which lack the dark saddle which the other marsh terns show, at least to some extent.

 Whiskered Tern behaviour
According to HANZAB (Volume III pp 766,769), Whiskered Terns usually forage on or over wetlands, but some times hawk for insects over dry plains.
Occasionally they even feed on the ground in farmland, mainly during plagues of mice, grasshoppers, caterpillars etc. I would say that the reason that WTs prefer wetlands is that not only do they provide such staples of the birds' diet as frogs, fish and crustaceans, but they are also a more reliable source of insects.
