  Literature of Newfoundland and Labrador
The Icelandic sagas may be the first Newfoundland literature; nobody is sure of the exact location of Helluland, Marklan, and Vinland, and it is possible that one or two, or perhaps all three landfalls, were made on the coast of Labrador and north and east Newfoundland.
Cormack, anxious to explore the interior and to locate the remnants of the Beothuks, the aboriginal Indian tribe of Newfoundland, walked from the east coast to the west, and the narrative of his journey is a monument to the man's vigour, determination, and scholarship.
Outside interest in Newfoundland was quickened when the laying of the Atlantic cable focused world attention on the western terminus of the celebrated attempts of 1858 and 1866.

 Railway: Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage
The saga of the line's construction across the interior and its continued operation in the face of enormous difficulties was a source of national pride in Newfoundland.
But there were also crucial junctures in Newfoundland history when the railway proved its worth: the beginnings of the pulp-and-paper industry in the early 20th century, during the two world wars, and the post-Confederation boom years.
This last is of particular moment in Newfoundland history in light of the suspension of responsible government in 1934, when the country was unable to service the public debt.

Cultural and heritage tourism is in its infancy in Newfoundland and Labrador and all indications are that it has significant growth potential over the next few years, fuelled by the anticipated echo effect of the Cabot celebrations and future events such as the 50th anniversary of Confederation and the Viking Millennium Project.
