South Tyneside is an administrative area of the metropolitan county of Tyne & Wear in England's north-east region.
It is bordered by four other metropolitan boroughs - City of Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead to the west, City of Sunderland in the south, and North Tyneside to the north.
Arbeia Roman Fort Museum at the Lawe Top and Souter Lighthouse on the coast near Whitburn (the first in the world to be generated by electricity) are other attractions.

The story starts in 1869 when there were 20 shipwrecks between South Shields and Sunderland, something had to be done.
A Cornishman, later knighted, his other claim to fame was that he built the version of the Eddystone Lighthouse which survived the battering of the sea where previous models had succumbed.
You would never believe it today as the area was cleared after the colliery closed in 1968 and has reverted to grass but John assures us that when we have a dry spell (!) you can see the outlines of some of the buildings.

There was a lovely slide of the miners with their banner en route to that year's miners' gala - motto of Marsden, "firm as a rock we stand" - no-one would have fore-seen the decline of Marsden rock itself.
The railway ran from the colliery to Westoe lane in South Shields where the colliery head offices were situated and where the only telephone was sited so villagers had to go there to call for the doctor in an emergency and treatment was carried out in the waiting room of the station!
The Chapel and the houses behind are still there but are really a part of Whitburn and these houses were used by the managers rather than the miners.
