Enthusiasts for gothic revival architecture in the United Kingdom were led by Horace Walpole, and were sometimes nicknamed "goths", the first positive use of the term in the modern period.
The gothic novel established much of the iconography of later horror literature and cinema, such as graveyards, ruined castles or churches, ghosts, vampires, nightmares, cursed families, being buried alive and melodramatic plots.

Whitby Goth weekend tickets are available for the whole weekend at very reasonable prices compared to other music festivals out there.
Whitby Goth festival has been on the up and up ever since, and what better venue that gothic Whitby with it's spectacular gothic cathedral remains, plus all things Dracula.
Whitby key entertainment venues used for this goth gathering are usually the Metropole Hotel in West Cliff, and other venues like the Resolution Hotel on Skinner Street, and the Walrus and Carpenter Tea rooms on Church Street.

Whitby is indeed a very friendly town for goths - and this is a major factor in encouraging everyone to let their crimped hair down.
Being on stage at WGW is an experience, and it is different to other festivals...there are no gaps in the crowd for a start, and the faces stretch out past the speaker stacks on both sides.
Whitby has probably set the boundaries as to what a UK goth festival can look up to, but I do not think people who are behind the one-dayers want them to be *like* Whitby (this can't happen anyway and I don't think they are any close to it happening).

Whitby Gothic Weekend, often abbreviated to WGW or simply referred to by attendees as Whitby, is a twice-yearly festival for goths, in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England, organised by Jo Hampshire who runs Top Mum Promotions.
The origins of WGW lie in an ad hoc meeting of around forty pen-pals who Hampshire had met through NME and which was arranged in 1994.
It has since grown into one of the most popular gothic events in the world, attracting attendees from across the UK and around the world.

The thing that makes me most proud about WGW is how its helped to dispel a lot of the old Goth rules which include, you arent allowed to laugh, you must own a Sisters album, and you must wear fl.

By an odd stroke of luck we arrived in Whitby at almost exactly the same time as the train, identifying a guy we'd ridden down with last time when we went into the cottage agency to collect the keys.
That afternoon's mission commenced with a visit to the Whitby tea rooms, where we failed to encounter anyone useful and were squished by inconsiderate locals, though the tea and food was very good.
For our last evening in Whitby, Donald and I went up to the Elsinore to sit around and talk with friends and strangers, including two American women who were fascinated by all the coverage of goth events in the Whitby Gazette.

I've nothing against those people enjoying themselves at Whitby too, but they're not the same as us, they're not people we know and are looking for, so labelling them as if they were has become problematic.
Most netgoths had become sick of hearing about the Atlanteans over the course of the weekend, but nevertheless he and I had succeeded in capturing photographic evidence of their campaign against goths (including the dreaded 'hangover mist'), which shall be released onto the web in due course.

The Whitby stage crew actually said they thought it was the best Whitby cover of all time...
That really did make my weekend complete although the other bands were good as well that night - a very good choice for a line up and I'd say the majority of people enjoyed themselves as much as I did - they got a good crowd reaction and that speaks for itself.
The Narcissus Pool are old friends of the WGW - they played at the very first event, back when the festival was nothing more than a bunch of goths in a pub.

The weekend's opening band are The Modern, who have in their favour a singer who looks a wee bit like Alison Goldfrapp from a certain angle, under favourable lighting conditions.
Whitby is made of steep staircases and wee alleyways and hidden courtyards and arches and cobbled streets, which doesn't exactly help matters.
As for Heartbeat, you can get postcards of Whitby that describe it as 'Heartbeat Country', and there's a Tyne Tees Television shop where you can purchase merchandise from shows produced by that fine organisation (even if it is entirely subsumed within the monolithic Granada).

Twelve bands were playing this particular Whitby (a new record), though the numerous other distractions (primarily getting ready in the evening) meant that I missed a couple.
The final band of the weekend was All About Eve, who used to be something really big many years ago, but seemed to lose their way after a brief taste of success.
The band were thus eminently suited to this particular slot, and whilst they don't sound as distinctive as they once did (several vaguely gothic female-vocal bands having emerged in their wake), they went down a storm and brought the festival to a close nicely.

On Saturday, they took Alex, Berna and myself to Whitby, since I'd never been there before, but had gathered it was Wonderously Gothic, thanks to "Dracula" and a v.
I was slightly disappointed, since touristiness diminished its spookiness, and I was hoping to see it misty and windswept: instead, we were alternately drenched and blasted with the cruel sun's rays.
We were also going to go to the Dracula thing, but found it had just closed for the day.
