WHITCHURCH means "white church." There must have been a church here as early as the 11th century, probably built of the white elvan found on Roborough Down only two or three miles away.
Walreddon is an attractive Elizabethan house, altered to some extent in the 18th century it was the home of a younger branch of the Courtenays in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Moor- town, 800 ft. up on the flank of Whitchurch Common, was the home of the Mooringe or Morwen family from at least the early 4th century, and probably much earlier.

 Whitchurch Bridge :: History
The south branch of the Ridgeway drops down to the Thames at Pangbourne and was one of the earliest crossing places into Oxfordshire, first by ferry and later by bridge.
The original proprietors grew to ten in number by the time the Act was passed to take over the ferry rights and to build at their own costs "a good and substantial bridge" which was described as being "of great utility and advantage to the public".
The second wooden bridge (above) was built late 1852 and completed in spring 1853 and was similar to the earlier one but was less steep and had only half the number of piers, the balustrade was perpendicular with a criss cross fence somewhat like the present one but simpler, and with no central ornaments.

Whitchurch Bridge is one of the few remaining private toll bridges across the River Thames, being owned and maintained by The Company of Proprietors of Whitchurch Bridge entirely from toll receipts.
