  Fortresses and Towers of Middle-earth
The Tower was the easternmost outpost of the defenses of Ithilien.
The Towers of the Teeth stood on either side of Cirith Gorgor, the Haunted Pass between the Mountains of Shadow and the Ash Mountains at the northwest corner of Mordor.
The Towers of the Teeth were built by the Men of Gondor after the defeat of Sauron at the end of the Second Age in order to guard against the possibility of the Dark Lord's return to Mordor.

The Dark Tower (2004 novel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dark Tower is the seventh and final book of novelist Stephen King's Dark Tower series, published September 21, 2004 (King's birthday) by Donald M. Grant Publishers, and illustrated by Michael Whelan.
Fans worldwide, concerned that King would never finish the series, especially after the author was nearly killed in 1999, breathed a collective sigh of relief at the long awaited completion of the epic story that took King more than thirty years to write.
If the reader does not heed the warning, the story resumes with Roland climbing to the top of the Dark Tower, and as he opens the final door, to his horror, he realizes he has reached the Tower countless times before.

And about that Dark Tower theory that King himself is at the top of the Tower, this seems unlikely to me because, at one point in The Tommyknockers, there is mention made of "that writer from Bangor who fills his novels with dirty words" or something close to that.
In 'Insomnia' and the 'Dark Tower' books it is explained that the Tower is inhabited by the forces of chaos and order and that there are the different levels in the tower, the higher the level the more powerful, influental and manipulative the forces are.

The tension in the Dark Tower series has built steadily from the beginning and, like in the best of King's novels, explodes into a violent, heart-tugging climax as Roland and his ka-tet finally near their goal.
I understand there are thematic and dramatic reasons for Roland coming to the tower alone, however the deaths of 3 of the ka-tet are inexcusable, overly-manipulative and pointless deaths to seemingly provoke an emotional response.
When King introduced his character Stephen King in Dark Tower VI, I felt that he pushed it too far, but after reading this partially autobiographical sketch, I knew how central the character King was in the plot.
