American White and American Creme Horse Registry
He was a snow white, pink-skinned, brown-eyed stallion of unknown breeding, was 15.2 hands talls and weighed approximately 1,200 pounds, with thick neck, stocky build, strong legs, heavy and wavy long mane and tail and was intelligent and of good disposition.
Because pink skinned white horses are commonly called "albino" the Thompsons originally incorporated that name for their breed, but later it was changed to "American White" and "American Creme" by a vote of the IAAA Board of Directors.
The whiteness of their coats is comparable to a snowy white bunny rabbit...or the white areas on a pinto horse.

The White Horse Dialogue   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
The most famous is this dialogue, which argues that "a white horse is not a horse." The so-called "White Horse Dialogue" is fascinating, because in it we see subtle rational argumentation used to try to establish a conclusion contrary to common sense.
Thus, it is evident that a white horse is not a horse.
Hence, the reason we think there are horses is only that we think that "horse" is "there are horses." It is not that we think "there are white horses" is "there are horses." Hence, because of the reason that there are horses, one cannot say that a [white] horse [is not] a horse.

 Coat Color Genetics
In the most extensively roaned horses, a typical pattern seen is that in which the body is silver due to a high percentage of white hair, but the legs and head are dark due to the preponderance of non-white hair.
It is possible for a horse to have both the overo and tobiano spotting patterns (as well as appaloosa) and a precise definition of such a coat color may be difficult.
Horses whose color cannot be defined may rarely be encountered, but a systematic appraisal of the genes likely to be found will provide a better identification than descriptive adjectives lacking a defined basis.

IPABRA "Bloodlines" : A Study of White Horses -- Not What They Seem!
These horses carry two cream (palomino/buckskin) genes, and have pink skin and blue eyes, but their coat is actually a very pale cream, and not a true white.
Since White Beauty could not be a grey (her sire was chestnut and her dam bay), and the sires involved were bays, the foals could not be greys (as so many "roan" Thoroughbreds are), so they were likely sabinos, which are often called roan by horsemen.
It should be noted that while he may not have been a white horse (or sabino white), it would be possible for a sabino white to also be a genetic grey, since sabino whites are simply pintos that are "all marking".

 APHA.Com - The Genetic Equation
Splashed white is the least common of the spotting patterns in horses, although it is increasing in frequency as breeders use more and more splashed white horses in their breeding programs.
The splashed white pattern was originally studied in Finnish Horses, and was reputed to be a true recessive pattern.
No homozygous splashed white horses have ever been documented, leading to the suspicion that this is yet another gene that cannot exist in homozygous form.

HORSES   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
To a Paint Horse breeder, a hair can mean the difference between holding your breath for 11 months to see if a foal will be born with Overo Lethal White Syndrome (OLWS), or knowing you made a genetic cross that ensures you won’t get a foal with the dreaded disease.
Neither has the splashed white pattern, which is characterized by a large amount of white on a horse’s face, white leg markings and solid bodies with sometimes a small white spot on the belly.
By knowing a horse’s genetic makeup and avoiding the crossing of a stallion and mare that both carry the lethal white gene, it is possible to produce foals that are overo, but not lethal white.

Wiltshire White Horses: The Uffington white horse
The Uffington white horse, one of only four that face to the right, is high on an escarpment of the Berkshire Downs below Whitehorse Hill, a mile and a half south of the village of Uffington, and it looks out over the Vale of the White Horse.
Unlike the solid and more or less naturalistic figures of the other horses, the Uffington white horse is formed from stylized curving lines some ten feet or less wide, and its length of around 365 feet makes it over twice as long as the longest of the Wiltshire horses.
The young readers' historical novel "Sun Horse, Moon Horse" by Rosemary Sutcliff, though fiction, is a fascinating speculation on the cutting of the Uffington horse by a member of the Iceni tribe, and paints a vivid picture of what life in the Bronze Age might have been like.

Most of the white horses are chalk hill carvings, and the chalk downs of central Wiltshire make it an ideal place for such figures.
Of the thirteen white horses known to have existed in Wiltshire, eight are still visible, and the others have either been lost completely, or are in a sense still there, under the turf, but have long since become grown over and are no longer visible.
This site concentrates on the Wiltshire horses, but aims to include all known hillside white horses in Britain and elsewhere, and includes some which are not chalk hill carvings but have been created by other methods.
