Topic: White Blood Cells (album)

LiveDaily Store :: White Blood Cells
White Blood Cells is an amazing piece of work, a benchmark that ought to inspire new legions of garage rockers for years to come.
But the rest of the album deserves the attention: "Hotel Yorba" and "I'm Finding it Harder to Be a Gentleman" are almost as immediate, and "The Union Forever" and "The Same Boy You've Always Known" surprise with their subtlety and almost pure genius that is Jack and Meg.
Comment: White Stripes' early attempt with White Blood Cells is a decent release that undermines their potential, which would come to surface in the followup, Elephant.

White Stripes: White Blood Cells (2001): Reviews
White Blood Cells doesn't veer far from the formula of past White Stripes records; all are tense, sparse and jagged.
Make no mistake about it, The White Stripes are the real deal, and if they can continue to kick out the jams as they do on White Blood Cells, everyone else would be well advised to get the fuck out of their way.
The White Stripes are a great rock and roll band, and White Blood Cells a suitable coming-out party.

The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
The White Stripes are basically an oddball brother and sister combo from Detroit, him on guitars and singing, her on drums.
And The White Stripes have this in spades.
White Blood Cells is like one of those Shine compilations, loads of great songs, but not really an album you're proud of owning.

 White blood cell Summary
T cells are vital components of cell-mediated immunity (which does not depend on the presence of antibodies circulating in body fluids and in tissues).
As well as in the blood, white cells are also found in large numbers in the lymphatic system, the spleen, and in other body tissues.

 The White Stripes Biography
Their follow-up to White Blood Cells, entitled Elephant, was released on April 1, 2003, again to widespread critical acclaim.
From the red and white peppermint candy motif of their debut singles, self-titled album, and stage show to their on-the-surface rudimentary style, they succeeded wildly and immediately with that mission.
The album was a critical smash and the White Stripes soon found themselves, along with the Strokes and the Hives, at the forefront of the new wave of rock and roll bands poised to take over the world.

Jack White has a way of keeping your attention completely on the album with his catchy guitar hooks and grunge-like voice.
While Jack White may not be the worlds greatest guitarist he has a Kurt Cobain-like quality X Factor which makes his guitar lines much more interesting than they actually are.
If I lost the album I would buy it again as it is a great album to put on to play guitar to and to sing with in the shower and play air guitar to.

The White Stripes : Elephant - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
White Blood Cells may have been a reaction to the amount of fame the White Stripes had received up to the point of its release, but, paradoxically, it made full-fledged rock stars out of Jack and Meg White and sold over half a million copies in the process.
Darker and more difficult than White Blood Cells, the album offers nothing as immediately crowd-pleasing or sweet as "Fell in Love With a Girl" or "We're Going to Be Friends," but it's more consistent, exploring disillusionment and rejection with razor-sharp focus.
Crucially, the White Stripes know the difference between fame and success; while they may not be entirely comfortable with their fame, they've succeeded at mixing blues, punk, and garage rock in an electrifying and unique way ever since they were strictly a Detroit phenomenon.

Rediscovering Loretta Lynn - The Boston Globe
Jack White, in a skintight, red cowboy suit with white fringe, seemed a little nervous when he came out to introduce his opening act.
Mike Brophey, program director at Boston's Country 99.5 FM, says the album is "consistent in that the music is good, but there's also a lot of variety." In this case, variety means a rock 'n' roll sheen in the arrangements, which still complement her folksy lyrics.
White, along with his bandmate, Meg White (who has sung Lynn's "Rated X" in concert), is the ultimate Lynn fan.

The music is made almost entirely by Jack and Meg White; a brother and sister or ex-husband and wife combo (depending on who you believe), and the two have a knack for cutting to the quick.
When their previous album, 2000's DeStijl, was secretly lauded as the latest music to bow down to until the White Stripes were inevitably discovered, you had to wonder what form the ridicule would take when the band broke (read: sold out).
From best album of the year from The Village Voice to the second coming from NME across the pond, The White Stripes earned more than their share of reasons for chest beating.

Pair of aces | The San Diego Union-Tribune
But the unlikely partnership between country-music legend Loretta Lynn and alt-rocker Jack White of the White Stripes has produced an album that is neither fishy nor foul.
The White Stripes' "White Blood Cells" album was dedicated to Lynn (whom White didn't know at the time), but when it came time to produce "Van Lear Rose," White didn't coddle his idol.
White's production sounds a little too polite at first, giving the title track, "Trouble on the Line" and "Family Tree" the pristine sheen of Franklin Mint memorabilia.

Album after album they continue to surprise you, delighting you emotionally, physically, and spiritually, their existence making your existence much, much richer.
After their album DeStijl was embraced by the indie rock hipster mafia (the new album's artwork cleverly lampoons the attention the band received), it was hard to tell what kind of relationship one would have with the White Stripes in the long term.
In Jack White (not to be confused with the equally but differently talented Jack Black), the band has an excellent singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer capable of shifting styles while retaining general cohesiveness and without seeming like pointless genre hopping.

Amazon.co.uk: White Blood Cells: The White Stripes: Music
I'd not heard the White Stripes before buying this album on the recommendation of a friend, except on a couple of live TV shows, where their sound levels were set up terribly so you couldn't hear any vocals and far too much drums.
Between the two of them, Mary and Jack White have created a sound and a tempo that is almost unique to themselves, thanks largely to Jack's fantastic voice which alternates between a spitting passion, gravelly kittykat growl and breaking country twang (and sometimes all three at once!).
OK, so the White Stripes are old news, but having just seen them perform Dead leaves and the dirty ground on the Top of The Pops' 2000th show, I just had to come through, put the album on full blast and rave about these guys again.

The White Stripes - White Blood Cells (2001)
White Blood Cells, Jack and Meg White's third effort for Sympathy for the Record Industry, wraps their powerful, deceptively simple style around meditations on fame, love, and betrayal.
Admittedly, White Blood Cells lacks some of the White Stripes' blues influence and urgency, but it perfects the pop skills the duo honed on De Stijl and expands on them.

The White Stripes - White Blood Cells (Sympathy for the Record Industry)
There are several bands within recent memory who try to take the blues or country as a direct source of inspiration, but there may be the only such band who look to those artists out of sincerity and purpose instead of for the simple reason of fashion.
Okay, okay, that other Detroit rock band, the White Stripes, would probably qualify as well, despite the fact that they wear matching red and white clothes and re-write their own biographies.
White Blood Cells may be less raw than the band's two previous albums, however, it still has energy and vitality.

Meg White's kit is bashed with such force you'd imagine her as some kind of incredible hulk, though in photos, she appears the prototypical indie girl-- waifish, with pigtails and a nasty smirk.
Here, the White Stripes are the most experimental they get, which is to say "not very," though the song reminds me of the ragged power of Royal Trux without the pointless artiness.
Certainly, it would be nice to hear the White Stripes take this music in a new direction, but this band is all about the songs, and the songs are good enough to stand alone, sans-flashy effects and tape editing.

The pasty-faced Whites are a logical offspring of the incestuous coupling of pasty post-Mod Brits like The Kinks and Led Zeppelin.
White Blood Cells is a carefully conceived album that transcends the more familiar blues 'n' ballads of last year's De Stijl and comes up with their own brand of garage pop.
