White Mountain Peak, located northeast of the city of Bishop on US-395, is the third highest peak in California and the highest outside of the Sierra Nevada.
White Mountain Road and others are not plowed during the winter and may be gated when blocked by snow.
Winter condition notes from smeek12: I just got back from White Mountain, March 30th (2004), and the total round trip distance for the South side was 52 miles, even though the rangers told me 44.

 White Mountain Wild Horse Territory
The White Mountain WHT is located on the California/Nevada border approximately 7 miles east of Benton, CA.
The territory is bounded by Highway 6 on the north, Fish Lake Valley on the east, Cottonwood Creek on the south, and the crest of the mountains on the west.
The origin of the White Mountain herd is unknown, but it is thought to date back to the establishment of the first ranches in the adjoining Fish Lake Valley area of Nevada.

Ecologically, the White Mountains are like the other ranges in the Basin and Range Province; they are dry, with relatively few trees, but the upper slopes hold open forests of mainly Great Basin Bristlecone Pine with some Limber pine and Lodgepole pine, and of Single-leaf pinyon and Utah juniper on the middle slopes.

 N5 - A prominent mountain trip in California - Nevada, October 2005
I had singled out White Mountain, Jefferson Mountain, Arc Dome and Star Peak, the plan would be to climb each peak in the morning, then move on to the next trailhead in the afternnon.
White Mountains sits right on the eastern side of Owens and I was heading more than 25 miles into this wilderness with planned parking above 12000 feet.
The morning view of the desert valley to the west as well as Shoshone mountain on the south side of the trailhead told me that this would be a good day.

(in Norway, mountains are climbed in the day, very seldom at night.) An early start is essential since the weather tends to be better in the morning and since one should be off the mountain well ahead of possible (and frequent) lightning in the afternoon.
The North-East top of Crestone Peak, this subpeak is 16 m lower, the mountain behind it is the 4177 m Colony Baldy.
The East summit of Crestone Peak, this summit seemed equally high, but is supposed to be 10 m lower than the main (west) summit.

North Palisade is the classic mountaineers peak in the Sierra Nevada requiring both snow/ice climbing ability and rock climbing skills.

The views from both the White Mountain Road and the summit itself are unique in that the panorama of the Sierra escarpment is nowhere else so dramatic from the ground.
During the late afternoon, a gigantic triangular shadow extended from the peak for miles across the haze to the east of the mountain.
We were on the peak at the peak (no pun intended) of the annual August meteor storm, but the moon was too bright for us to see any shooting stars.

A fierce storm the previous week end dumped 2 feet of snow on the mountain and caused Bill T Russell to cancel a similar trip on Sep 7.

Having climbed White Mtn about 6-7 times over last 30 yrs, you have to have some sensibility about the road conditions, the weather forecast and ability of vehicle to get in and out with some margin of safety.
And going into Whites in Oct is asking for trouble as temps are low and storms come thru without warning.
I used to help with search and rescue situations but decided to quit when too many dummies got into trouble from thinking that wherever they went and no matter how stupid/ignorant their actions, someone would bail them out and all they had to do was call.

I've hiked this peak twice and this was my first time riding it, nothing beats not having to do the walk back and just cruising back at 15-20 mph to Barcroft.
The descents on White mountain road were fast and fun and it didn't seem as washboarded as before, maybe I just had better lines.
White mountain switchbacks are a little technical on the descent but not bad and still pretty fast.

On Saturday, 23 September I drove out to hike this mountain for the first time, arriving at my camping spot in the Patriarch Grove at around midnight and would hike the mountain the following day.

 White Mountain Peak Hike
It is the highest peak in the White Mountain range and the third highest peak in the state of California.
Just past the buildings and the pen where they have some sheep the trail uses switchbacks to climb up to a saddle where you will get a good view of White Mountain Peak, there is also an observatory off to the side of the trail.
We took in the views for about 30 minutes then decided it was time to head back, not at all looking forward to climbing the two sections that we descended on the way to the top.
