Thanks to the extended "white night" dusks of Petersburg, however, the narrator ventures outside his home and encounters Nastenka, a lively and attractive young woman who seeks advice for her troubled relationship with another man who hasn't returned from an extended business trip.
Filmed completely inside the studio, the film recreates the foggy canal-lined streets of Livorno and the rabble-rousing social outcasts who frequent its shadows.
Both films are solid conceptions that work well on their own terms, and both deserve extended review as serious interpretations of Dostoevsky's classic text, a provocative critique of the cozy, secluded comfort of illusions.

 Barnes & Noble.com - Biography
He directed only 13 films over the course of 40 years, but these films were in a category all their own, minimalist works that tended towards radical (and sometimes controversial) reinterpretations of such classical sources as Diderot, Dostoyevsky, and Tolstoy.
The film, which revolved around a nun's love and self-sacrifice in the service of the rehabilitation of a fallen woman, showed early indication of the director's preference for a narrative composed of a series of short scenes, as well as a fascination with the details found in human skill and ritual.
The film made evident his preoccupation with transcendence and spirituality (next to art, perhaps the greatest influence on Bresson's work was Catholicism) and was centered around the doomed priest's attainment of a state of grace.

Visconti's version of the Dostoievsky story - about the chance encounter of a couple as she is waiting in vain for her lover, and the obsessive, panic-stricken relationship which then develops between them - later filmed by Bresson as Four Nights of a Dreamer.
Visconti traps his characters (three excellent performances) within a claustrophobic canal-side set, and the film is a series of brief walks, chases, attempted escapes, always frustrated.
Shot as neo-realist high tragedy, the film offers its characters only one strange moment of escape from their night-time obsessions - a raucous, sexual, subversive scene in a dance-hall.

For Nunn, "Twelfth Night"'s study of gender has a decidedly modern resonance, which determined the film's style: "I felt the urge to make the content of the play seem real, and not pantomimic or stylized, so that the contrary extremes of sexual behavior in the central characters are seen in a believable social context.
