Topic: White Oleander (2002 movie)

  White Oleander (2002)
White Oleander chronicles the life of Astrid (Alison Lohman), a young teenager who journeys through a series of foster homes after her mother (Michelle Pfeiffer) goes to prison for committing a crime of passion.
White Oleander is presented in a nicely done anamorphic widescreen transfer in the film’s original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1.
White Oleander manages to maintain a somewhat soft appearance by design and it’s evident that grain was not the overriding factor in the vast majority of these scenes.

 White Oleander (2002): Reviews
White Oleander goes through the paces with a little more dignity than usual, which is a mark of either director Peter Kosminsky's refusal to overplay the melodrama, or his inability to wring it for all it's worth.
The overwrought White Oleander may be middling drama, but if it bears any resemblance to truth (which I doubt), it's a brutal indictment of the L.A. County Department of Social Services.
White Oleander is one of the toughest movies to rate.

Based on the novel of the same name by Janet Fitch, White Oleander does its best to capture the essence of the story about a young girl who's sent to a series of foster homes after her eccentric mother is imprisoned for a crime of passion.
White Oleander focuses on teen beauty Astrid Magnusson (Alison Lohman) and her equally beautiful mother Ingrid (Michelle Pfeiffer), an accomplished--if self-centered and manipulative--artist who tends to drag her daughter, a budding artist in her own right, into her own neuroses.
Director Peter Kosminsky does his best with Oleander to create a haunting atmosphere, and there are times when the material is elevated, especially in the scenes between Zellweger and Lohman and those that explore the tragedy that befalls them.

Reviewing the book WHITE OLEANDER in 1999 I felt it was just another rehash of victimization of teens and adults by society.
Now the movie is out on DVD and in the home, without the disruption of an audience to distract, WHITE OLEANDER becomes a more sensitive exploration of the need of love between parent and child, or between each of us.

Toward the end, the movies slips into an awkward over-sentimentality that results in a forced sense of closure, but that's the only time when the narrative loses its direction.
Nevertheless, the central theme, that of a child trying to escape from the pernicious influence of a misguided parent, has universal appeal, and White Oleander's narrative is comfortably linear and uncomplicated.

White Oleander Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Watching the women of White Oleander struggle through two hours of conflict and heartache, it's hard not to think that with another cast (Meredith Baxter, Jenna Elfman, Jennie Garth, and one of the Olsen twins, perhaps?), this cinematic flower would have wilted onto Lifetime instead of blooming in multiplexes across the country.
But thanks to a trio of strong performances by big-name actresses (Michelle Pfeiffer, Robin Wright Penn, and Renee Zellweger), as well as an amazing debut by newcomer Alison Lohman, Peter Kosminsky's coming-of-age story is engrossing and affecting, if ultimately not quite satisfying.
Thanks to Lohman's graceful, haunting performance as Astrid, her character's cinematic journey is compelling and touching — it's impossible not to ache at the haunted expression on her face every time a chance at happiness is ripped away.
