The White Pass and Yukon Route narrow gauge railroad, part of the area's mining past, is nowadays in operation purely for the tourist trade and runs throughout the summer months.
The population was estimated at 8,000 residents during the spring of 1898 with approximately 1,000 prospective miners passing through town each week.
In 1898, a 14-mile, steam-operated tramway was constructed up the Skagway side of the White Pass, easing the burden of those prospectors who could afford the fee to use it.

White Pass, near Skagway, was lower in elevation and easier to traverse with pack animals but was somewhat longer than the Chilkoot Trail.
However, the Chilkoot Pass and the White Pass have been used as travel corridors between the coast and the interior for at least the last 200 years, so some signs of that use can be expected.
However, when the miners arrived with tons of goods to transport across the passes, the local natives were the primary packers until the arrival of wagons and horses, the later construction of an aerial tram, and finally the construction of the railroad.

A flat car, donated by White Pass, was brought inside and the Lake Annie railcar, a reproduction of a passenger coach, was built using the flat car as a base - see the photo to the right.

From the time the first prospectors came over the Chilkoot Pass, this place was known as Caribou Crossing because of the large herds of caribou that crossed the narrows between Bennett and Tagish Lakes twice a year on their annual migration.
During construction of the White Pass Railway, tracks were laid north from Bennett and south from Whitehorse.
The legendary White Pass train made its first appearance at Carcross in 15 years on July 12 this year when it carried gold rush descendants, dignitaries and others as part of the re-enactment of the first shipment of Klondike gold from Skagway to Seattle.

Located at the border between Alaska and Canada, in the southeast Alaska panhandle, the White Pass & Yukon is now a tourist railroad.
Until 1982, it was one of the last narrow gauge (3ft between the rails) railroads still in operation in North America, providing a 110 miles long rail-link between the port of Skagway, Alaska, and the city of Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory (Canada).
It pioneered containerization and was one of the few American narrow gauge railroads to undertake a dieselization as soon as the fifties.

 History of the Tanana Valley Railroad
The WP&YR operates during the summer months hauling passengers over its original route from Skagway in Alaska to Lake Bennett in British Columbia, Canada.
In 1907, the railroad was refinanced under a new name, the Tanana Valley Railroad and on May 15, 1907, construction began on the second phase of the TVRR, an extension of the trackage to Chatanika.
The route was originally planned to go over Cleary Summit, but new mining activity in the Dome, Vault, Ridgetop and Olnes areas caused the railroad to be routed up the Fox Creek Valley to meet the needs of the new communities.
