The forbidding alkali desert of the Tularosa Basin was one of the last areas of New Mexico to be settled by Americans.
Even desert plants and animals have difficulty surviving among the shifting sand dunes of the area.A small number of plants have made remarkable adaptations to avoid being buried by the moving sand.
The source of sand required for dunes is gypsum from the floor of nearby Lake Lucero at the southern end of Lake Otero.

The White Sands National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located about 25 km (15 miles) southwest of Alamogordo in Otero County in the state of New Mexico.
White Sands National Monument is well-known for its fields of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals.
Because the park lies completely within the White Sands Missile Range, both the park and U.S. Route 70 between Las Cruces, New Mexico and Alamogordo is subject to closure for safety reasons when tests are conducted on the missile range.

White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), formerly known as the White Sands Proving Grounds, is located in Otero County, New Mexico, mostly in the Tularosa Basin, a valley between the Organ Mountains, San Andres Mountains and the Sacramento Mountains of the U.S. state of New Mexico, it includes the northern reaches of the Jornada del Muerto.
The white sands are composed of gypsum crystals which have leached out of the surrounding mountains.
There have been a number of spies at White Sands over the years, and not all of them were caught.

The gypsum that forms the white sands was deposited at the bottom of a shallow sea that covered this area 250 million years ago.
White Sands National Monument is about 200 miles south of the Rockies, but the same compressional forces that formed the Rocky Mountains also uplifted the marine rocks in southern New Mexico.
All of the gypsum sand in the dune field was formed by the breakdown of selenite crystals, most of which represent recycling of gypsum crystals from the evaporite phase of drying Lake Otero.

The road is paved for a while although blowing sand often covers the surface; towards the centre though, the surface is just compacted gypsum, and the 'road' becomes a series of large cleared areas, which can be adapted to changes in dune position - they move by up to 20 feet per year.
