White-billed Diver - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The White-billed Diver, known in North America as Yellow-billed Loon (Gavia adamsii), is the largest member of the loon or diver family, at 77-90cm in length with a 135-150 cm wingspan, although it is only marginally larger than the similar Great Northern Diver.
The main distinguishing feature from Great Northern Diver is the longer straw-yellow bill which, because the culmen is straight, appears slightly uptilted.
Breeding adults have a black head, white underparts and chequered black-and-white mantle.

There are a number of other bill shape differences in adult loons, detailed in Binford and Remsen (1974), but it takes much of the first year for the full bill shape to develop, so these are less helpful in first-year loons.
In winter, the bill of Common Loon is often ivory-colored and it becomes blackish only as spring approaches.
