 Duck
There are 9 species in the genus Dendrocygna which has a worldwide distribution through the tropics and subtropics, and a single diving species, Thalassornis leuconotus the White-backed Duck[?] of Africa, which is difficult to classify and has often been placed in the Oxyurinae (which it resembles in morphology and feeding habits).
Ducks are mostly aquatic birds, smaller than their relatives the swans or geese, found in both fresh and salt water.
Ducks should not be confused with several types of unrelated birds with similar forms, such as loons or divers, grebes, gallinules, and coots[?].

White-backed Duck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
White-backed Ducks live in southern Africa, especially between Senegal and Chad in the west and Ethiopia and South Africa in the east.
The White-backed Duck (Thalassornis leuconotus) is a waterbird of the family Anatidae.
It is distinct from all other ducks, but most closely related to the whistling ducks in the subfamily Dendrocygninae, though also showing some similarities to the stiff-tailed ducks in the subfamily Oxyurinae (family Anatidae).

 wild ducks in africa
A good variety of ducks are to be seen in and around the natural pans of Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa, with white-faced whistling duck, white-backed duck, pygmy goose and red-billed teal among those frequently present.
Ducks (except for the whistling ducks), on the other hand, have horizontal plates or scales on the tarsus, and many species have iridescent feathers on the wing.
The impressive knob-billed duck is also known as the comb duck, and both names are derived from the strange fleshy swelling which sits - and grows - upon the male's bill.

 ipedia.com: Anatidae Article
Anatidae is the biological family that includes the ducks and most duck-like waterfowl, such as geese and swan.
The dabbling duck group, of worldwide distribution, were previously restricted to just one or two genera, but has now been extended to include 10 genera and about 55 species, including several genera formerly known as the "perching ducks":
Duck, eider and goose feathers and down have long been popular for bedspreads, pillows, sleeping bags and coats.

 REVIEWS
More than a third of the 148 photographs are in color and several, such as the Comb Duck, White-faced Whistling Duck, and Red-crested Pochard (to mention a few) are striking and quite beautiful.
As the name "tree duck" is almost universally used in North American publications, Johnsgard might have at least mentioned in his world list of anatids that the name "tree duck" is an important and widely used synonym for the whistling ducks.
Since "laymen," with regard to waterfowl, comprise such diverse groups as seasoned duck hunters, wildlife technicians, and week-end birdwatchers, it is perhaps a little unfair for a reviewer to be too categorical in defining what is appropriate to include in a book of this sort.

 Articles - Anseriformes
All Anseriformes have this basic structure, but many have subsequently adopted alternative feeding strategies: geese graze on plants, the saw-billed ducks catch fish; even the screamers, which have bills that seem on first sight more like those of the game birds, still have vestigal lamellae.
Subfamily Oxyurinae: 8 species of stiff-tail ducks and allies.
The combination of the internal shape of the bill and a modified tongue acts as a suction pump to draw water in at the tip of the bill and expel it from the sides and rear; an array of fine filter plates called lamellae traps small particles, which are then licked off and swallowed.
