August Bird of the Month - White-Winged Dove
White wings can now be found in some regions of East Texas and as far north as Amarillo and Dalhart.)
The heavy-bodied white wing can be distinguished from the mourning dove by the large white wing-patches and by its shorter rounded tail with broad white corners.
Although the dove population will never again reach its former numbers, the white wing remains a popular game bird in South Texas and tracts of land are being purchased to serve as refuges for doves and other declining species.

Hirundinidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
passerines characterised by their adaptation to aerial feeding, and known as swallows and martins.
Their adaptations to hunting insects on the wing are a slender streamlined body, and long pointed wings.
There is no scientific distinction between the two names, but the squarer tailed species tend to be called martins.

 * Northern Rough-winged Swallow - (Bird): Definition
Bank Swallow s can be confused with Northern Rough-winged Swallow s, but Northern Rough-wingeds lack the dark breast-band and forked tail.
Bank Swallow is similar, but smaller, and has white throat and brown breast band.
It is found in South America from Buenos Aires northward and is replaced in North America by the Northern Rough-winged Swallow (Stelgidopteryx serripennis).

 N. Rough-winged Swallow
The Northern Rough-winged Swallow is common but not as well known as other species of swallows.
Like other swallows, they are beneficial by consuming large quantities of insects such as flies, bees, flying ants and others.
These swallows nest alone, in very small groups, or on the periphery of Bank Swallow colonies where earthen banks occur near water.

 Colombia and Panama, January 1997
We didn't have a book with us so I wrote down a description of what we saw and later identified it as a White-winged Swallow.
We walked out to the beach and saw a small swallow flying over the water and then landing on a rock.
When we got to the Hilton Hotel where everyone got off the bus for a free drink and rest stop, Doug and I decided that we would skip the last stop to the emerald shop and explore around the area on our own.

Birds, Familiar: Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Life Histories of North American Birds, A.C. Bent
The rough-winged swallow was discovered by John James Audubon in Louisiana, but the description of the bird in his "Ornithological Biography" is based rather on specimens collected many years later at Charleston, S. C., which city is, therefore, the type locality.
A nesting site near the village of Mount Pleasant, S. C., used occasionally by rough-winged swallows was in the end of a hole in a bank of burnt oyster shell--location of an antebellum lime kiln facing Copahee Sound.
This swallow is an excellent example of a species that can readily adapt itself to conditions and utilize any kind of cavity for the reception of its nest.

 Northern Rough-winged Swallow
This swallow was once considered a single species, the Rough-winged Swallow, that ranged from southern Canada to Argentina.
This swallow may nest only a few feet from others, but is not as colonial as other swallow species and may nest alone at times.
When seen perched from the front they are fairly easy to separate from the Bank Swallow and young Tree Swallow, but on the wing they can be harder to tell apart.

 Northern Rough-winged Swallow
In a survey of breeding birds in the park, performed from 1996-1999, 23 Northern Rough-winged Swallows were observed during the breeding season.
Physical characteristics: This swallow is a plain brown, with lighter underparts and a grayish-brown throat and breast.
This bird shows a preference for flying insects, snatched while on the wing, but occasionally taken from the ground or the surface of the water.

 White-banded Swallow - Atticora fasciata
They are usually in small groups, as in the second photo where you see them associating with a White-winged Swallow Tachycineta albiventer.
The White-banded Swallow is distributed throughout the Amazon and Orinoco Basins where it is found along streams and rivers bordered by forest.
The first was taken on the River Pacaas novas near Guajará-Mirim, Rondônia, while the second was taken on the River Cristalino, Mato Grosso.

 White-winged Scoter
When the white wing patches are not visible she may resemble a female Surf Scoter, which also has two white facial patches.
Males are black and have a small white comma-shaped area behind and below the eye.
They are the largest of the three scoter species, and are easily distinguished in flight by the wing patches formed by the secondary feathers that contrast strongly with the dark body.

Original Artwork: Don Balke: White-winged Dove
The White-winged Dove sports grayish-brown plumage with large white patches on its wings.
These scarce sources of water attract not only songbirds and doves, but predators as well, so the White-winged Dove seldom flies directly to the water's edge, but lands first in nearby trees or shrubs.
After surveying the scene, it warily approaches the water and may swallow one or two long drafts before taking flight again.

Birds of Eastern North America - Rough-winged Swallows
With the Bank Swallow this bird differs from our other Swallows in the absence of metallic colors, while from the Bank Swallow it is to be distinguished by its plain, pale brownish gray, uniformly colored throat and breast, and somewhat slower, less erratic flight.
Ad.--Upper parts brownish gray; throat and breast pale brownish gray; belly white; outer web of first primary with a series of recurved hooklets; no tuft of feathers above the hind toe.
They do not, however, always nest in holes in banks, but are sometimes found nesting about bridges, railway trestles and their abutments.

early rough-winged swallow in Greenville, NC?
(I had no binoculars, as I was on my way to work.) I supposed that it was a N. Rough-winged Swallow, but it isn't quite the last week in March and Fussell lists them as being rare then.
This morning, there was a small, short-tailed, brown backed swallow flying very swiftly in the vicinity of Green Mill Run at the intersection of 10-th St. and College Hill Drive in Greenville, NC.
It was very white underneath, except possibly at the throat, flying very fast and smoothly.

Northern Rough-winged Swallow - Stelgidopteryx serripennis - Northern Rough-winged Swallows
While it is common to see flocks of swallows of the same species hawking insects together over water in the Weaselhead, seeing a flock of Northern Rough-winged Swallows hawking together is not very typical.
Barn Swallows, meanwhile, have long, deeply forked tails and Bank Swallows have a prominent brown breast band across a white breast.
To tell them apart from other swallows while in flight, watch for the slightly notched tail and brownish-grey breast and under parts of the Northern Rough-winged Swallow.

Birdwatching trip report - Iguazu Falls, Argentina - surfbirds.com
We also had time to see some more birds like a Snail Kite, a couple of Amazon Kingfishers and a couple of White-winged Swallows resting on a boulder partly protruding out of the water in a side flowing canal.
While walking along the trails, at some places the mist flying from the Falls came upon us and cameras and lenses had to be covered to avoid being soaked.
Only on the last day did the temperatures warm up allowing some butterflies to take to the wing as well as some wild rodents similar to Guinea pigs locally called "Cuis".

 Northern Rough-winged Swallow
A cavity nester found statewide, Northern Rough-winged Swallows are normally solitary nesters in cut banks along bends in rivers and streams.
Northern Rough-winged Swallows have, however, expanded their nesting habitat to include road-cut cliffs along highways where they become somewhat colonial.
Sometimes their burrows are among those of bank swallows, a colonial nester.
