Whitechapel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Whitechapel is a neighbourhood in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in England.
Whitechapel Rd. itself was not particularly squalid through most of this period—it was the warren of small dark streets branching from it that contained the greatest suffering, filth and danger, especially Dorset St. (now a private alley), Thrawl St., Berners St. (renamed Henriques St.), Wentworth St. and others.
Its heart is Whitechapel Road itself, named for a small chapel of ease dedicated to St. Mary: its earliest known rector was Hugh de Fulbourne in 1329.

Aldgate East tube station - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The next station to the east, St Mary's (Whitechapel Road) was now so close to Aldgate East as to be unnecessary, so it was closed and an additional exit placed at the east end of the nearby new Aldgate East station.
The original Aldgate East station was opened in 1884 as part of an eastern extension to the Metropolitan District Railway (now the District Line), some way to the west of the current station, close to the Metropolitan Railway's Aldgate station.
Since the station was built completely under a widened road, and was built after concrete had started to be used as a construction material, the platforms have a particularly high headroom.

In 1938, Aldgate East was moved further eastwards and given a new entrance only a few hundred yards from St Mary's (Whitechapel Road), immediately rendering that station surplus to requirements.
