BANGALORE: India’s ambitions of emerging a global chip design and development hub has suffered a big setback as Intel has abandoned Project Whitefield to develop Xeon processors for servers with more than four processors, a paper reported.
According to a report appearing in the Times of India, Intel has also shelved the new enterprise server platform, code-named New Town, also under development in India and which was to use the Whitefield processor.
A part of the Whitefield team is expected to be used for testing and validation of certain server platforms, the paper said.
