 NYC history
Manhattan's location between the Hudson, East and Harlem Rivers and on New York Harbor was the main reason for its development as a thriving city.
Manhattan had many boat clubs that were gathered together in an area referred to as "Sculler’s Row." A small tributary along the Harlem known as Sherman Creek was a popular location for boathouses.
The other waterfront areas of Manhattan were also built up with roadways and industry, preventing their use by the general public.

They are 25-foot, four-oared Whitehall gigs, the kind used relentlessly in the Hudson, East and Harlem rivers in the early 1800s as the primary form of fast water transportation.
According to popular folklore, Whitehall gigs take their name from a pub down in the Battery in the days when the New York waterways were overseen by hardy, seafaring types in loose-weave cable-knit sweaters -- the sort of men portrayed in movies by actors like William Holden or Richard Widmark.
One of the greatest obstacles the group faces is the lack of launching facilities in and around Manhattan, a by-product of industrial development in the 1930s in which most of the boathouses were destroyed to make way for the motorways that circumnavigate the island.

After buying Manhattan Island from the Manahatas Indians in 1637, they paid for the island sitting in the heart of the harbor with two ax heads, a string of beads and a handful of nails.
Throughout its years as an Army base, it was a quaint community with all of the amenities a small town affords (steam ferries transported soldiers and their families to and from Manhattan) and some that come only on an island situated so closely to the center of the world — New York City.
Brooklyn looked a stone's throw away from the eastern side of the island — although many of the officers' young sons of who lived on base proved that it was not.
