The Lindy Circle - Lindy Hop History
Although the lineage and history of Lindy may be muddled, it is certain that it was born from the blending of African rhythms and movements with European structured dance.
Lindy flourished there, partly because it was one of the few racially integrated ballrooms where White and Black could dance, be inspired and shared moves like no other place.
Whitey's Lindy Hoppers never would have thought that their dance would be spread across the world via the internet, videos, workshops and classes.

The Jiving Lindy Hoppers considers itself to be only the latest in a long link of enthusiasts who have passed on this dance form to others since it first came to life.
A third generation emerged in the early 1950's at the Savoy Ballroom who refused to accept the story being pushed at that time that no one was interested in "Swing." They proved it wrong by restoring, and some people say even surpassing the standards of dance set by the previous generation.
At the beginning of this period opportunities to learn were few and far between, and when they did take place they were not like current formats in that few of the teachers "counted" and seldom broke down the steps, but expected students to learn more by imitating the real thing.

There are some negative stories about Whitey and his 'Strongmen' and the ethics he used to get dancers to dance on his team from intimidation to strong arming and even murder among rival "Gangs," how true these stories are today are anyone's guess (but there are a few newspaper pieces that lend some credence).
