Whitman Mayo ( November 13, 1930 - May 22, 2001) was an African-American actor, who was best known for playing Grady on the television sitcom Sanford and Son.
His call to "Sanford and Son" came shortly thereafter when a friend from the New Lafayette group who was by that time writing for Norman Lear recommended Mayo for a part in a single episode.
Having a plethora of experience with the tentative in his life, Mayo viewed his continuing success on the series as fleeting and ventured into other trades to assure financial stability; in 1975, for instance, he opened a travel agency in Inglewood, California.

Mayo at least gave a new slant on the humor for a partial season.
While I think people are overly harsh on Whitman Mayo's tenure -- it's not his fault Redd Foxx was on strike, and stuff like the wild parsley or "Good goobly goop" is classic SandS -- trying to spin the series off of Grady's family wasn't one of the brighter ideas that the writers had.
Whitman Mayo couldn't carry a show in a starring role and that was probably the reason why the spinoff Grady flopped.
