Three of those were followed by days of frolic or days of pleasure and recreation, namely Christmas, Easter Monday and Whitmonday and they were the seasons for games, for shooting matches, for military exercises, for visiting, for fishing and hunting.
On this day the maidens usually attended church with their new spring finery, while the church itself was decorated with flowers and communion services were and are generally held on this day.
Whitmonday is given to worldly recreation and the yokels and young folks of the rural districts spent the day in "der shtadt" in sightseeing, pretzel eating, and peanut munching.

Pentecost, too, was very intense, with Acension day, Pentecost, Whitmonday and Whit Tuesday all occurring in rapid succession.
While Bach doesn’t exactly simply convert the portrayal of the prince to the portrayal of Jesus, the text is based not only upon the famous passage in John: "God so loved the world," but the very interesting and controversial passage in Acts that tells of Jesus bypassing Judaism as a step to baptism.
Although the cantata was originally for Whitmonday, the reading has been transferred to the Sundays after Pentecost in the new prayerbook.

But then it says "falls on the same week of the year" which is complete bunk and makes me wonder whether the journalist and his "fact checking editors" actually have a clue about the christian Calendar.
Pentecost/Whitsunday is precisely 49 days after Easter (WhitMonday is therefore by basic sums 50 days after Easter) and Easter is the archtypical "movable feast" that is the source of 52000 google hits on the phrase not to mention a Hemingway story and countless quotes in countless boks, magazines and newspapers (and webpages).
Since Easter is a movable feast and one that can vary in a range of about 5 weeks in March/April the "falls on the same week of the year" is about as inaccurate a statement as it is possible to make.

 November 17, 2002 (Like a Mighty Army)
In England, Pentecost (which is celebrated on the Sunday nearest the 50th day after Easter) was known as Whitsunday….a linguistic aberration of White Sunday (given that while we wear red on that day, the Brits wear white).
Although he lived to the age of 90 and wrote over 85 books before his death in 1924, the only reasons we have to remember Rev. Sabine Baring-Gould are a pair of hymns….one, a quiet missionary hymn of the evening….the other, a rousing marching hymn of the morning.
Incidentally, the tune to which we now sing “Onward, Christian Soldiers” is not the one his Sunday school kids would have learned on their Whitmonday march from village to village.

Niklas’ blog » Blog Archive » Today, Swedish nationalism flourishes
From today on, some christians are upset about a day off: Whitmonday is no longer a national holiday in Sweden, as this day, the 6th of June, has taken its place.
I’m not saying I’ve become a christian, neither that I’m a Whitmonday fan, but that I strongly dislike nationalism in all forms.
The only reason people are celebrating the national day is the fact that we’re more special than everybody who’s not living in Sweden, because…they’re not living within the border of our country.

'By A Spring' is the second of two 'Water Music' suites composed (in the style of Haydn and Mozart) by Michael for Whitmonday (the Monday following Pentecost), which was celebrated as a music festival by the Bethlehem Moravian community.
The townfolk would gather on the banks of the Lehigh River, enjoy the spring weather, converse, and listen to the bucolic sounds, charm, and playful whimsey of Michael's music.

In the Moravian community of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in the early nineteenth century, Whitmonday (the Monday following Pentecost) came to be celebrated as a general music festival and informal anniversary of the Philharmonic Society of Bethlehem.
The inhabitants of the town would gather outdoors, on the banks of the Lehigh River, and enjoy the spring weather, conversation, and music.
David Moritz Michael (17511827), who initiated the use of the wind ensemble for the Whitmonday celebration, wrote two suites specifically for this day: the Wasserfahrt, or Water Journey, in 1809, and Suiten Bey einer Quelle zu blasen, or Suites to Play by a Spring, presumably in 1810.
