Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states, rises like the phoenix from the western rim of the Great Basin Desert of California.
Located within the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range of Sequoia National Park, Mt. Whitney is situated on the east side of the Great Western Divide, a chain of mountains that runs north/south through the center of the park, and is therefore not visible from any of the roads to the west.
Whitney is the most frequently climbed peak in the Sierra Nevadas, and perhaps the entire U.S. The summit can be most directly reached via a 10.7-mile trail from Whitney Portal, 13 miles west of of Lone Pine.

There are many prominent outcrops of deep red eroded sandstone in the hills and desert surrounding Lake Mead, including various places either side of SSR 167, the Northshore Road, and quite extensive formations in the Valley of Fire State Park.
One location less well known is the Whitney Pockets area, which has several high mounds rising starkly above the flat plains of the Mojave Desert northeast of the lake.
Left is a rougher road through the foothills of the Virgin Mountains then on to Mesquite, right is towards the Lake Mead NRA while straight ahead are the Whitney Pockets, rising quite abruptly from the sandy desert, here dotted by Joshua trees as well as various types of cacti.

I have used Whitney's books on numerous hikes and have found discrepancies on water availability and I disagree avidly on his opinion of "a great hike".
He is accurate on difficulty ratings and distances, but check with the visitor's center to verify water sources and directions for the trail or route and MOST IMPORTANTLY, get recommendations from people who have recently hiked your choice of trails.

We left Whitney Portal at 05:15 and were back there at 20:10, some 15 hours later.  The descent took us almost as long as the ascent, though younger people with stronger knees could probably get down a lot more quickly.
Doing it over three days would give you a lot more time, but also a lot more to carry if you are camping out (there are no refuges on the route).  We felt that a one-day ascent would be a better option for us, though we had a permit for two days, just in case.
There are lots of motels: we stayed, appropriately enough, at the Mount Whitney Motel on the main drag (actually, almost everything in Lone Pine is on the main drag).
