Whitsuntide   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
A Whitsun Ale is not now, despite its name, a type of beer, but in its origins before the Reformation ales were brewed to raise funds for the church, and were associated with other forms of merrymaking.
After the Civil War ended in 1646 the Puritan government banned all types of merrymaking, but, after the Restoration of Charles II, Whitsun Ales became a major event - helped no doubt by the fact that Charles was born on a Whit Monday and so encouraged the celebration.
Whitsun Ales now are country fairs, with sports and competitions, Morris dancing displays, music and of course socialising, eating and drinking, in fact a major event on the social calendar.

THEMEN   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
The Christian Whitsuntide (Whitsun in Greek is pentekoste 'fiftieth [day] after Easter') coincides with the Jewish "Feast of the Weeks" (chag-haschabuot in Hebrew).
However, Whitsun, as a feast of its own only started in the 4th century, the most important context being the descending of the Holy Spirit.
Houses as well as dwellings for the animals are decorated in green and twigs which have been blessed and thus, no longer permit the winter demons and witches to strike; on the contrary, they bring about fertility and good luck.

IV: WHITSUN: A Symbol of the Immortality of the Ego
This is the festival which, representing the immortality of the Ego, is a token of the fact that we, as men, do not share only in the universal life of nature, do not merely undergo death, but that we are individual immortal beings, rising ever and again from death.
Just as the Christmas festival is connected with the earth and the Easter festival with the stars, so is the Whitsun festival directly connected with man, with individual man, inasmuch as he receives the spark of spiritual life out of the whole universe.
And so for those who are seeking for the spiritual, this festival of Whitsun has a meaning and content of special profundity, calling ever and again for perpetual renewal of the spiritual quest.

The Very Best Books : The Whitsun Weddings (Audio, Faber)
Philip Larkin's fifth collection of poetry, The Whitsun Weddings, was the one that firmly established him as one of Britain's major poets.
The dulcet tones and free-flowing nature of his best work curdle in the mouth when he's off form, leaving trite rhymes, dull rhythms, and some of the most godawful thumping lines one is likely to see outside Helen Steiner Rice.
Still, as I said, there is far less bad than good in The Whitsun Weddings, and it does deserve its place in the annals of British literature.

II: WHITSUN: the Festival of the free Individuality
Easter is determined according to the heavenly constellations; Whitsun is an event which must follow it as a necessary result, after the lapse of a certain number of weeks.
When we understand the Whitsun festival as a festival, not only of that moment, but of the future as well, then there is magically brought before our spiritual eyes the expectancy of receiving the Holy Spirit.
So it was that those who first understood the Christ felt themselves called through the Whitsun event to proclaim what was in their own souls, what, in the revelation and inspiration of their own souls revealed itself to them as the content of the Christ-teaching.

I particularly like the title poem "The Whitsun Weddings" wherehe talks about peoples ignorance of each other, and how weddings are suchand special day but are as common as muck.
Larkin's poetry is very commonly perceived as being highly negative and melancholic, with themes such as death and disappointment featuring frequently throughout.
However when reading the Whitsun weddings you can't help but feel that Larkin is simply creating a voice for our own personal worries and concerns.

The Ladies Go Dancing at Whitsun. Or do they?
Now, _I_ read in 'English Dance and Song' some while ago (couple of years?) that this all goes back to Ascot-u-Wychwood; I gather they had a thriving Folk Dance Club, which included all sorts of traditional dance, and was kept going by the ladies in the absence of the chaps.
There are a number of maypole traditions where dancing occurred at different dates during the month of May. In my mothers family, they maintained the Ickwell maypole tradition which if memory serves me, happened on the third weekend in May.
And what the words suggest to me is that the ladies _continue_ to dance at Whitsun, but no longer with the men - keeping the memory of happier times.

I believe he was a man who wanted to believe in love and marriage but who couldn't.He seems to long for the life that he writes about even though it fails to make everything alright.I believe Larkin was a sad and lonely man and in the whitsun weddings he really portrays this through his poems.
Although I have not read much of "The Less Deceived" other than 'Toads', "The Whitsun Weddings" is a clever subtle and intriguing collection of poetry, fashioned to expose what Larkin sees as being the facade of modern life.
In amonst this he includes elements of what he sees as true romance, which isn't the 'Bri Nylon Baby-Dolls and Shorties' of the 'Large Cool Store' but rather the held hands of the tomb stone effigies form 'An Arundel Tomb', which has survived generations of different interpretations but always stood as a symbol of love.

The Apostles were gathered in Jerusalem for the Feast of Pentecost (a day of thanksgiving for the first fruits of the harvest) and to commemorate the receiving of the Ten Commandments by Moses on Mount Sinai (Acts 2:1-4).

To quote the 19th-century writer Blumhardt, there is such a thing as “action in waiting.” It is the act of focusing on something we expect, and preparing inwardly to receive it.
Pondering this over several days, I found myself comparing the situation of the first believers with the state of our world today, and realizing that the two might not be all that different.
And yet I am convinced that Whitsun can still come, today, to every one of us.
