Whittingehame Burial Ground Survey   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-01)
Whittingehame Church is situated close to the northern boundary of the former parish which stretches southwards into the Lammermuir Hills.
In total, 173 monuments were recorded, including some 17th Century stones originally sited at the former parish church and graveyard near Whittingehame Tower and then moved to the present churchyard after the new church was built in 1722.
As with Prestonkirk, the comprehensive survey involved recording not just the monumental inscriptions, but also the details of each stone, its dimensions, materials, types of carving and condition, and each stone was photographed to complete the record.

The street may be a prosperous and intriguingly discreet West End enclave, but as you face No 27 the view which greets you - a pair of unprepossessing garages in front of an overgrown garden - hardly inspires envy or enthusiasm.
MacCalman and Robertson won over neighbours through extensive discussions with the local Claythorn Community Council, although they did have to compromise on the purity of their design, substituting the initial flat roof with a slightly pitched one.
The fact that Whittingehame Drive is actually composed of an unusual mixture of dwellings from a variety of genres also alleviated the typical pressure to conform to a single dominant style.

Historic Scotland archaeologist Chris Tabraham, who has been working on the site in his spare time, said local people had heard of the village before, but until now did not know where it was.
"There is a church which now stands called Whittingehame Kirk, and the map shows that the village was to the left of it.

THE RT HON GERALD ARTHUR JAMES, EARL OF BALFOUR, VISCOUNT TRAPRAIN OF WHITTINGEHAME FOR DECLARATOR OF FEE SIMPLE PROPRIETORSHIP v.
In terms of the Rutherfurd Act Lord Balfour was in the lawful possession of the estate of Whittingehame and held that estate by virtue of the trust disposition and settlement as altered by the codicil dated 20 December 1927.
The effect of the codicil upon the truster's settlement was wholly different from the exercise of a power of appointment by one to whom that power was delegated by a prior testamentary disposition.

To look at, it is no more than a common field forming part of the farming landscape in the heart of East Lothian.
It contains the answer to an early medieval mystery, only solved after the accidental discovery of a 200-year-old map.
It pointed to the field being the location of the long-lost settlement of Whittingehame, which dated from the seventh century, but was abandoned nearly 300 years ago.
