Wholemeal bread made from flour using the whole grain is the best choice, but it’s not as simple as just buying ‘wholemeal’ bread any more.
Wholemeal bread not only has much more fibre than other types but also much higher levels of vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin E and phytochemicals (chemicals from plants that seem to protect against cancer, heart disease and other illnesses).
Wholemeal bread was previously required to contain 90% wholemeal flour and rye bread 30% rye flour.
