 The Hack FAQ
A ton of comics move to Los Angeles to pursue a television or film career and write a lot of material based on the little differences between LA and their former place of living.
Mostly comics just do a poor characterization of a Middle Eastern/Hindu and throw in a couple of cheap shots about Slurpees or a dot on their forehead and leave it be.
When comics deny their homophobia or racism before a joke, you can be sure that they are trying to soften the blow of one of the most homophobic or racist jokes you'll ever hear.

It was an enjoyable comic and I remember getting it from the local book exchanges in the mid 70s.
When Whoopee incorprated Shiver and Shake, the Wanted poster was dropped in favour of World Wide Weirdies in which readers would draw punningly titled spooky land-marks (eg Screaming Tower of Pisa).
The most unusual strip in Whoopee was Dick Doobie the upside down back to front man. To understand what Dick was saying you had to hold the coimc upside down in front of a mirror.

Pioneer in TV turned on wit
Steve Allen, the lanky, multitalented comic, composer and raconteur who became a television legend as the original host of "The Tonight Show," has died at 78.
Allen's distinctively loopy sense of humor and whip-smart intelligence were accompanied by signature horn-rimmed glasses and a memorable, cascading laugh.
The show was at its best when Allen was making comic whoopee with his talented band of goofballs, including Louis Nye ("Hi-ho, Steverino!), Don Knotts, Tom Poston, Bill Dana and Pat Harrington Jr.

Bright Lights Film Journal | Whoopee
Whoopee is a find, a treasure, a thing of beauty and a joy forever.
Whoopee was part of a wave of “all-singing, all-dancing” musicals that hit the U.S. with the advent of talking pictures.
Since Eddie Cantor, the star of Whoopee, was a comic, the basic pattern is distorted, though still intact.

This is the premise behind Marvel's new four-issue "Defenders" mini-series by the acclaimed creators of DC's "Formerly Known as the Justice League" mini-series: Keith Giffen, J. Marc DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire.
"It's not all 'yuk-yuk-yuk' where everyone is throwing whoopee cushions and they're all having a grand old time," Giffen explained.
A lot of people seem to think that Giffen hates and resents DC Comics and "Identity Crisis" because of the death of Sue Dibny, who was a prominent character in his "Justice League" stories from the 1980s.

What is surprising is how sharp and skilled some of the earliest work is. The melodies are more than fine and dandy, but simpler and less daringly original than what he'd grow into; the lyrics show many seeds of the later wit and polish.
The album opens with a private birthday song from 1955, which teases a friend about looking older than he is. It's so much fun, and the comic timing in Sondheim's delivery is superb.
Barbara is reunited with Todd Shroeder who produced, orchestrated and played piano on her only other solo album, Patterns, which also showed off her quirky and comic side, back in 1998.

My parents showed me this comic strip a couple of weeks ago and I waited for it to appear on the King Features Syndicate site to share it with all of you.
My mother asked in jest, "Is that going to be the title of your next book?" I assured her that I rave about my childhood in Pleasantville and consider my life rather charmed, except for a couple of unfortunate relationships with narcissists.
At that point, you know that they are interested in what you have to offer, and you advance to the next stage of the sales cycle: the formal proposal.

 Homophobia and Apple Pie
Now, bizarrely, actors — excepting Republicans like Arnold "I Call Them Girlie Men" Schwarzenegger — are the latest group that poses a hazard to decent, "normal" Americans, of whom Bush is the self-appointed protector.
In his Marquette speech, Bush ignored the Sodom of San Francisco and focused instead on the Gomorrah of Hollywood, some of whose prominent performers — particularly comic Whoopee Goldberg — had used ribald humor at a Kerry-Edwards fundraiser.
However, considering that comic Dennis Miller was warming up the crowd for the president the very next day, it's clear that you can escape the Hollywood stigma if you become a Republican — or a homophobe.
