PyroMusic.net - Review of: In Flames - Whoracle
'Whoracle' is that borderline album, the moment before In Flames made their slow but steady descent towards mediocrity (or a more commercially viable sound, your call).
By this stage in their careers, the one thing that had improved outside of production budgets for In Flames were the vocals of Anders who really managed to put some grunt into the delivery of lyrics which married well with the generally 'heavier' music.
Although it has got nothing on any of the In Flames releases to come before it, 'Whoracle' is far and away the strongest album in the In Flames catalogue to appear since it was released.

"Whoracle" is clear evidence of how In Flames established themselves as the epicenter of the melodic death metal scene.
Musically "Whoracle" is not as lithe as 1999's "Colony," but don't let that stop you from picking up one of the best releases of 1997.
The greater vocal variety on "Whoracle" makes up for the slight difference in quality (and I mean slight in the smallest terms possible).

I say this for while I felt that Whoracle was a good album, it was a huge letdown for me after the brilliance of The Jester Race.
Some of this may be that the band had less opportunity to work on the Whoracle songs, but I think that it was more the fact that Whoracle caught the band in transition, with longtime In Flamesians Glenn Ljundstrom and Johan Larsson leaving the band after that album's recording.
Whoracle slowed things down and split ideas into separate songs (where The Jester Race flowed as one complete boy of work to me), and Colony found the band experimenting more with a somewhat "alternative" flavor.

Whoracle came and went, more accessible than TJR, but not making as much of an impact in my eyes.
Commercially though, Whoracle brought the band much acclaim, but also dividing the band due to their increased popularity.
We love the work on the Whoracle, and we want to take it to the next level, but we don't want to change it too much.

WHORACLE is the ultimate testimony of a process of reconciliation and normalization in modern music...
Death Metal as an underground phenomena obviously needed to celebrate disapproval to the elements of style used by the grand old brother Heavy Metal - best represented by the low grunting of their leading vocalists as opposed to the standard castrated squeaking of the traditional predecessors.

Feo Amante's Feo Music: Ryan Harding reviews IN FLAMES: Colony
COLONY comes soon enough on the heels of WHORACLE, and is about as unexciting and overrated.
WHORACLE was a step down from THE JESTER RACE, and more so from LUNAR STRAIN.
For one, too many songs never evolve beyond a mid-paced tempo, which is the fastest ticket to boredom.

Unlike the albums before it and after it, Whoracle, didn't seem to evolve in sound.

In Flames - Satan Stole My Teddybear
We're all very familiar with the Swedish melodo-death style now: the harmonious guitar leads, hoarse shouting vocals, etc. And to a certain degree, the style is becoming stagnant as lesser bands only serve to dilute the excellence of the better bands of the genre.
Clayman, like Colony before it and Whoracle before even that, is a standard melodic Swedish death metal release which relies heavily on those twin guitar riffs and leads.
Their past three albums, Whoracle, Colony and Clayman, have not survived the test of time after their initial releases.

In Flames : Whoracle - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
A master of progressive death metal or the "Gothenberg sound" practiced by many a Swedish band, In Flames delivers one of its best efforts with 1997's Whoracle.
Indeed, some tracks are much better than others on Whoracle.
None of these sour notes manages to damage Whoracle, and the record has ultimately become accepted in the highly factional underground metal community as an important release not only for In Flames, but for the entire melodic death metal movement.

In Flames: Melodic Heavy Metal With Death Metal Vocals
And although In Flames are doing nothing totally original, they nevertheless perform their melodic "death" metal just as good, if not better, than any other band treading a similar musical path.
Also of note is the metalized cover of Depeche Mode's "Everything Counts", a surprising choice for a cover, though its always more interesting for metal bands to cover non metal songs, and In Flames do a fantastic job at doing the song justice while delivering it in their own style.
But when the material is performed at such a high level as this, it definitely does not take away from the overall enjoyment of the album.

Perhaps some fans didn't have such difficulty making the transition from snakespit vocalist to laryngitis powermetal, but I sure did.
Whoracle, again, speeds through desolate landscapes, stops at a rest area and cavorts in the bushes, then jams the high-octane metal monster back into overdrive again.
The closing instrumental, "Whoracle," repeats a sweet acoustic guitar line as tribal drumming builds and angels sing softly, fading in and out like a passing dream.

People may argue that In Flames is stronger than ever and they wouldn't necessarily be wrong at all....In Flames is a fantastic melodic metal band, although their newer material, especially Clayman, is a LOT LESS death metal and less technical, also utilizing clean vocals in alot of their catchy choruses and verses.
Whoracle shows the band in a more mature state, creating great songs that STICK in your head.
Very creative and thought-inducing, you'll know once you read the lyrics that these guys are serious, none of that cheesy crap or lyrics-just-for-lyrics-sake.

Rough Edge: In Flames CD Reviews
There are numbers here that are faster than anything they've done since "Whoracle" and shit heavier than "Clayman" and "Colony" combined.
In Flames have seemed to adapt more Depeche Mode Influences and less Iron Maiden ones, and although I am a great fan of Iron Maiden, it is refreshing to feel different moods pop out of a "melodic death metal album." You just can't write twin guitar melodies forever.
This has afforded the band to travel the globe in support of such discs as "Whoracle," "Colony," and "Clayman." So, it should come as no surprise that a live album to document this particular phase of their career predominantly includes songs from these three discs.

In Flames has managed to release exactly such a CD in the form of their third full-length album, "Whoracle".
It's a shame that promo copies usually don't have a lyrics sheet attached, because I think that we have here a band that also knows how to pen down some good lyrics (another comparison here with Dark Tranquillity).
Bugger, I never quite know into which pigeonhole to put bands, and besides all this pigeonholing is more than a bit stupid.

 In Flames - Whoracle review
Because you asked for it and I suffered through it, you are now going to read about Whoracle from In Flames.
Using a style which is a combination of death metal and Iron Maiden guitar work, In Flames as a band creates some really melodic, good music.
The slow melodic style of music laid down in Whoracle with grunt/screaming vocals only leads to the vocals standing out too much and takes away from the beauty of the music.

I also like the older stuff, but the raw vocals on Whoracle, Lunar Strain, and TJR turn some people off.

IN FLAMES are back, releasing the sequel to their last masterpiece "The Jester Race" on October 10th - entitled "Whoracle"!!!
The first aspect that attracts attention is a double line-up change: Glenn Ljungström (Guitar) and Johann Larsson (Bass) seem to got replaced by Niklas Engerlin and Peter Iwers (I will soon check this out at Nuclear Blast's office - watch out the news-section).
Coming to the record itself: "Whoracle" contains eleven songs and an overall playing time of 42:25 minutes, so I expected a lot as the CD wandered into my CD player and I didn't got disappointed!!

In flames have been one of my favourite bands for many years.
Whoracle is a quite simply a solid album from beginning to end.
The instrumental pieces "Dialogue with the Stars" and "Whoracle" are also hypnotizing as well, and if you really have good taste in metal (or music in general, for that matter), then you'll definitely find yourself listening to this album non-stop.

It is difficult to write anything useful in this review, because the album carries on more or less in the same fashion as its predecessor, "Whoracle".
The songs sound fine, the guitar melodies are classic, production is grade A. None of the songs stand out much, but that's primarily because they're all on a very high level to begin with (except for the superfluous "Pallar Anders Visa", an instrumental ditty).
Unlike with "Whoracle", where the lyrics weren't supplied with the promo, this time I just bought the album and did get to read the lyrics.

In Flames, Soilwork - heres what i' m looking for:
Anytime you get vocals from either of these bands, there are going to be some " death" style vocals.
In Flames has a couple of instrumentals (The Jester' s Dance, Whoracle, Dialogue with the Stars, etc) and Soilwork has an instrumental on their first album, but in the other cases, there aren' t going to be a lot of clean vox.
It' s hard to get into them, I know, I used to not be able to stand it, and In Flames were one of the first bands to bring me in, specifically Whoracle and Colony.
