SummitPost - Whorl Mountain -- Climbing, Hiking & Mountaineering   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The Whorl massif is essentially three peaks set atop a high and sharp ridge that runs south from Matterhorn Pass and separates the Spiller Creek drainage from Matterhorn Canyon.
What is unique about Whorl is that it is one of those mountains that (especially when seen from the Virginia Peak area) looks absolutely unclimbable except by mountain goats and climbing gods, but actually has a route up the mountain (the SE face) that is doable by average folks.
Perhaps a better camping spot for Whorl is to continue south from Horse Creek Pass, descending slightly to the obvious bench, until you reach a sandy flat spot just beneath the middle and north peaks of Whorl.

Dispensation of Dermatoglyphic Whorl Patterns on the Hands' Nail Phalanges
whorl patterns only on the right thumb, middle & fourth finger "23" and all whorl patterns on the fingers of right hand "32") we have maximum number of men's formulas on the fingers of left hand equal to 13.
Thus we can come to the conclusion that for men the prevalence of whorl patterns on the fingers of the right hand is characteristic (at the given numerator and denominator), and that of women - on the fingers of left hand.
We also conducted research on dispensation of whorl patterns of men & women at the point of absence or presence of radial loops at least on one of the fingers.

Quality of Spermatozoal Morphology in Angus Yearling Bulls may be related to Hair Whorl Shape - Hair Whorls and Bull ...
Facial whorl position on the forehead of cattle has been correlated with temperament (Grandin et al., 1995; Tanner et al., 1995; Randle, 1998; Lanier et al., 1999) and may be of value in selective breeding for a calm temperament (Grandin et al., 1994).
Hair whorls were also classified into 2 extreme groups: 1) bulls that had perfect round spirals with rotation or 2) bulls that had facial whorls with a line that was longer than the diameter of the bull's eye.
Bulls with 1 or 2 facial hair whorls with a round epicenter had a higher percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa (79 ± 1.5%) than bulls with 1 or 2 facial hair whorls with a non-round epicenter (71 ± 2.1%; P = 0.005).

The following factors favor the development of the rice whorl maggot: standing water in paddies during the vegetative stage, the presence of host plants year-rounds, and transplanting of young seedlings.
It is common in irrigated fields and feeds on the central whorl leaf of the vegetative stage of the rice plant.
The use of insecticide is not recommended for the rice whorl maggot control because the rice plant can compensate for the damage caused.
