HMAS Whyalla was landlocked as a tourist attraction in 1987.
Whyalla is in the City of Whyalla local government area (along with some of the sparsely inhabited areas around it), the state electorate of Giles and the federal Division of Grey.

As the Memorial’s chief historian since 1987 he has developed particular expertise in the colonial period, the Great War and the Second World War, as well as in British imperial military history and medical history.
He has become one of Australia’s most active military historians, having published seventeen books of various kinds and as a public historian has contributed to many of the Memorial’s permanent and temporary exhibitions.
Dr Stanley is currently jointly supervising a PhD at Deakin University on Australia and the Second World War and a PhD at the Australian Defence Force Academy on the RAAF in the European air war and a PhD at the Australian National University on Second World War prisoner-of-war history.
