Outside is Whyalla's original wood and corrugated iron lockup (it must have been absolutely deadly in summer) which is the only known example of a portable gaol in South Australia.

HMAS Whyalla was anchored in Sydney Harbour on 31 May 1942 when the Japanese midget submarines attack took place.
In January 1943, HMAS Whyalla became the first RAN warship to participate in the survey of unknown coastal waters of Papua, New Guinea.
In 1945, HMAS Whyalla was attached to the British Pacific Fleet and formed part of the occupying forces that received the Japanese surrender of Hong Kong.

WHYALLA continued the hazardous work of surveying the inadequately charted New Guinea waters until the end of April 1943, when she was relieved by HMAS SHEPPARTON.
WHYALLA was handed over to her new owner and renamed RIP, being employed as a lights maintenance vessel.
Between February and April 1987, WHYALLA was slowly moved up the slipway from which she was launched in 1941, and then relocated two kilometres inland and placed on permanent foundations, becoming the centrepiece for the Whyalla Maritime Museum which was officially opened on 29 October 1988.

 OneSteel comits $250m to extend Whyalla Steelworks
OneSteel managing director Bob Every Tuesday said by mining the larger magnetite deposits, Onesteel would extend the life of the operations from 2020 to at least 2027 while the different chemical make-up of the iron ore meant the cost of producing steel would be lower.
Onesteel has approved $30 million for the start-up phase at Whyalla to be spent between now and December 2004.
Whyalla produces about 65 per cent of the company's steel processing steel from iron ore.

Whyalla's role in World War II and the deaths of 29 of its citizens serving its country in wartime have been perpetuated in a new book written by former Whyalla resident and now Principal Historian at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, Dr Peter Stanley.
It is the first history of Whyalla produced by a professional historian and based on a full range of available archival resources in Whyalla, Adelaide, Melbourne and Canberra, many of which have never been previously published.
Whyalla at War 1939-45 will go on sale on Monday, August 16, initially, from the Whyalla Council office and Whyalla Visitor Centre, and through mail order, but it is hoped other retail outlets will also stock the publication.

 Whyalla tragedy highlights Australian air safety concerns
In the worst aviation accident in South Australia for 28 years, eight people on board a twin-engine Piper Navajo Chieftain owned by Whyalla Airlines are believed to have died last week when their plane plunged into the Spencer Gulf, about 10 km south of Whyalla, after both of its engines failed.
The plane was on a regular flight to Whyalla, a steel-making and industrial port about 250 km north-west of the state capital, Adelaide.
Whether the official inquiries uncover the causes of the Whyalla tragedy, a common thread has emerged over the past decade—the drive for profits has led to reduced regulation, decreased surveillance, lack of enforcement, and ready official agreements with operators.

 Cost of Whyalla project expected to blow out to $300m - Business - Business
Broking house CSFB estimated that the capital cost for the project - dubbed Project Magnet - was now likely to be $300 million after taking into account labour cost increases, brought on by a national skills shortage, and skyrocketing prices for construction materials, including steel.
The effect of capital expenditure would be to extend the life of the Whyalla works from 2020, based on the group's hematite resources alone, to at least 2027.
Whyalla produces about 1.2 million tonnes of steel a year, when it is not suffering from the sort of blast furnace problems that hit it in the December half last year.
