Jamaica Gleaner - A wicketkeeper or no one else - Tuesday | May 23, 2000
Based on the fact that there are already eight batsmen in the 16-man squad, it should not be a batsman, and based on the fact that there are already seven bowlers - including six fast bowlers, it should not be another bowler.
The 17th place, therefore, should go to a wicketkeeper - for the simple reason that with only one in the squad, there is no reserve, and that, as the selectors in their plea for the extra player have said time and time again, it is a tough tour with a tight schedule.
According to the word going the rounds, had the selectors asked the Board for a 17th player in order to accommodate a second wicketkeeper, their request would have been granted, and if they now ask for a second wicketkeeper, the Board will agree.

The Hindu : Kirmani stumped by selectors' decision
Such a scenario, where there is just one wicketkeeper to do duty for the side during an entire tour, will send the wrong signals, feels Kimani who is not the kind to hold back his views.
Two specialist wicketkeepers are a must on any campaign, opines Kirmani, who is in Chennai to coach the boys and girls of the J.K. & Thejas Cricket Academy.
When such an accomplished person in his field goes on record stating that the wicketkeepers in the country are being treated shabbily, the men who matter better take notice.

rediff.com: cricket channel - Wicketkeeper Ratra ready to go to South Africa
Wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra is "mentally and physically ready" to fly out to South Africa in case of an SOS from the touring Indian cricket team.
Ratra was put on standby by India's cricket selectors after wicketkeeper Sameer Dighe, who was especially flown out for the three-Test series, pulled out of the first game minutes before it started at Bloemfontein on November 3 due to back spasms.
Ian Healy of Australia, however, remains the idol of Ratra, who made his first-class debut during the 1998-99 season and is now a regular in Haryana's Ranji Trophy team.

Jamaica Gleaner - Wicketkeeper Hibbert and batsman Baugh - Thursday | January 29, 2004
After squeezing out a first innings lead, Jamaica, set 245 to win, lost by 40, and although there are four more rounds to come, although statistically they still have a chance, with Barbados on maximum 36 points from three matches, Jamaica, on 19 also from three, are really up against it.
In one of the most brilliant performances by a Jamaica wicketkeeper for a long, long time, and certainly the best since the days of Jeffrey Dujon, Hibbert took nine catches and made one stumping for a competition record of 10 dismissals in a match.
Hibbert, right now, however, is brilliant, he is at the top of his form, and remembering that he too has ambitions of playing for the West Indies, there is no just reason why, as some are saying, he should be sidelined in an effort to protect Baugh.

 Jamaica Gleaner - Wanted, a few good wicketkeepers - Tuesday | May 21, 2002
Although he looked reasonably good a year or so ago and is young enough that he could improve, Hibbert is not now a good wicketkeeper, he drops the ball too often, including when it touches the bat, and his selection is one of the reasons why the selectors are under fire right around the region.
The truth, however, is that when one looks at the other wicketkeepers, with Wayne Phillips of the Windward Islands falling by the wayside, the selectors had no choice but to select Hibbert.
For a region that produced quality wicketkeepers like Allie Binns, Gerry Alexander, Jackie Hendriks, Deryck Murray, David Murray, and Jeffrey Dujon, the present standard of wicketkeeping is embarrassing and something should be done about it.

Dasgupta & Bangar: what a contrast!
He is a reasonably good batsman and has the natural temperament of a good wicketkeeper.
Let the selectors promote Ratra because he is a natural wicketkeeper and looks an extremely good prospect with his aggressive attitude.
As far as Dasgupta is concerned, I am afraid he would have to vacate the wicketkeeper's slot unless of course, he improves dramatically and proves us all wrong.

Though Patel fell in love with wicketkeeping watching Ian Healy on television, his idol is Adam Gilchrist.

The reason wicketkeepers miss chances is because they are surprised, whereas they should be expecting it.

An excellent wicketkeeper and useful right-handed middle-order batsman, he made his first-class debut for the Queensland state team in the 1986-1987 season, as understudy to Peter Anderson.
Although he has since been overshadowed as a batsman by current Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, he was a very useful lower-order batsman, with over 4000 Test runs at an average of 27.39, including four centuries and twenty-two half-centuries.
Healy was widely considered the world's best wicketkeeper when he announced his retirement from all cricket in 1999, receiving selection as the wicketkeeper in the Australian Cricket Board's team of the 20th Century ahead of greats such as Rod Marsh, Wally Grout and Don Tallon.

The Indian cricket team’s thinktank is, apparently, keen the selectors pick two wicketkeepers in the 16-strong squad for the Test series in South Africa.
Indications are the wicketkeeper’s slot—slots, if the selectors also agree to an ‘understudy’—could take up much time at the selection meeting.
Besides the wicketkeepers, the one other slot, which may lead to considerable debate, concerns the seventh batsman.

Gilchrist, 29, will be the first wicketkeeper to captain Australia in a test match since Barry Jarman, who in 1968 became the only wicketkeeper to fill the role for Australia in the 20th century.
Gilchrist said he had captained Western Australia in the past and the extra responsibility had not affected his ability to play as a specialist batsman and wicketkeeper, effectively a wicketkeeping all-rounder.

WICKETKEEPER: The wicketkeeper sets the tone for the fielding side, taking the ball cleanly, helping to organise and encourage the field and generally keeping everyone on their toes.
Standing right behind the stumps, ball after ball, the wicketkeeper is in the perfect position to analyse both the batsmen and the bowlers strengths and weaknesses and is a vital cog in the team 'think tank'.
FIRST SLIP: The fielder at First slip normally stands a few paces behind the wicketkeeper as the ball tends to travel quickly if a batsman gets a faint edge on the ball.

Guardian Unlimited Sport | Special reports | Debate: Should Geraint Jones be replaced by a specialist keeper?
I have nothing against Geraint Jones personally but I have always believed that wicketkeeping is a specialist position and, after the captain, the keeper is the most important person on the field.
I've heard it said that the selectors feel it's easier to turn Jones into a world-class wicketkeeper than it would be to turn a wicketkeeper into a batsman.
If the art of wicketkeeping is dying I don't know if that might have something to do with the influence of one-day cricket.

Forthright Victoria wicketkeeper Darren Berry has challenged Australia's selectors to pick our next Test keeper based on skills behind the stumps and not ability with the bat.
Berry, who retired Test skipper Steve Waugh said was unlucky not to have played Test cricket, highlighted a series of recent incidents in which second-rate wicketkeepers' mistakes have cost sides dearly.
Berry said a distinction had to be drawn between wicketkeepers who could bat and batsmen who could keep wicket.

The sacrificial aspect of wicketkeeping certainly struck a chord with the essentially masochistic Victorian gentleman, none more so than Albert 'Armless' Ainesworthy, who insisted on keeping wicket with his hands tied firmly behind his back.
Armless’ county career (for his adopted county of Worcester in 1893) lasted only two hours forty seven minutes but in that time he contrived to have two batsmen run out with his clinical headers to the base of the stumps.

Runless Read loses place to Jones
England's tour management have finally lost patience with the batting form of wicketkeeper Chris Read, promoting Kent's Geraint Jones in his place as he wins his first Test cap in the 4th and final Test in Antigua.
Jones was handed his debut after England showed their ruthless side by changing the line-up which had clinched their first series triumph in the Caribbean for 36 years and dropping Chris Read despite his outstanding performances behind the stumps.
But he has scored only 162 runs in 11 innings since the start of the winter with a highest score of 38 against Bangladesh and the tourists believe Jones, who averaged 44.30 during his maiden season for Kent, is better suited to that role.
