Wide Gauge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wide Gauge was an early model railway and toy train rail gauge, introduced in the United States in 1906 by Lionel Corporation.
O gauge, which was smaller and less expensive to manufacture, thus became the most popular scale in the United States almost by default.
Standard gauge also was revived in the United States in the 1950s by the small firm of McCoy Manufacturing, who produced trains of original design well into the 1990s.

Broad gauge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Broad gauge railways use a rail gauge (distance between the rails) greater than the standard gauge of 4 ft 8½ in (1435 mm).
Broad gauge lines were gradually converted to dual gauge or standard gauge from 1864, and finally the last of Brunel's broad gauge was converted in 1892.
In India a gauge of 5 ft 6 in (1676 mm) is widespread.

Gauge 1 has seen something of a remarkable revival in recent years after decades of near extinction commercially, with a growing number of smaller UK manufacturers offering electricly powered locomotive and rolling stock kits and parts for (mostly) indoor layout use.
EM gauge was an earlier attempt in the 1950s to improve the inaccuracies of OO gauge, with wider, more accurate track at 18 mm between the rails, but still narrower than the correct gauge.
In North America the depiction of 3ft gauge railroads in N scale using Z scale track is known as "Nn3"; in Europe, metre gauge modelling in N scale is known as "Nm".

Brief Historical Summary of the Railroads in Peru
This private railroad of 43 km was built to a narrow gauge of 0.914m and ran from the port of Pimentel to the estates at Pomalca and Pucalá, connecting several plantations.
Its gauge was 1.435m and it was in operation until 1967.
It utilizes the standard gauge of 1.435 and is 240 km long, with 5 tunnels, one of which is of 8 km, being the sixth largest in the world.

1 gauge   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Its track measured 1.75 inches (44.45 mm), making it larger than O gauge but slightly smaller than wide gauge, which came to be the dominant U.S. standard during the 1920s.
1 gauge survives today as it is used by the modern G scale, a popular standard for outdoor model railroads.
Although vintage 1 gauge trains use the same track standard as modern G scale, scale modeling was not a primary design consideration in 1 gauge's heyday, so the actual size and scale of the locomotives and cars varied.

Interface - The Journal of Wheel/Rail Interaction
Part 1 of "Effects of Wide Gauge on Derailment Potential" examined how wide gauge occurs, some of the symptoms and reasons why wide gauge is undesirable.
The telltale sign of dynamic gauge widening is evidence on the tie surface that the plate is moving laterally under load.
The approximate total dynamic gauge is determined by adding the amount of rail movement against the shoulder of the tie plate and the amount of tie plate movement on the surface of the tie.

Military Railroads in the Baltic States 1940 to 1945
Of those 7.000 km (4.500 miles), approximately 2.900 km (1.900 miles) were wide gauge (1.524mm), 2.000 km (1.300 miles) were standard gauge (1.435mm) and 2.100 km (1.400 miles) were narrow gauge lines.
The first section of wide gauge (1.524mm) rail lines to be converted to standard gauge (1.435mm) by the Germans in the Baltics was in Lithuania.
By the summer of 1942, all of the other primary wide gauge lines in Byelorussia and the Ukraine were also converted to standard gauge.

A train can generally continue to roll over a gauge that wide, but under the right circumstances a wheel can either slip down to the ballast and ties or turn a rail over, and begin ripping up the track structure.

Track was lighter, right of way required less space, Using the construction materials of the time (wood), narrow gauge rolling stock had a higher load to car weight ratio, in mountainous aras, less blasting was required, and lighter trestles could be used.
Narrow gauge was universal, it existed in all the states, with the possible exception of Wyoming.
Because of the metric system in Continental Europe most French, German and Swiss narrow gauge systems were in meter gauge (1000 millimetres), in Austria however they used quite a lot of 750 millimeter track (which is almost equal to 2 1/2 ft).

Articles - Railroad switch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Stub switches are used primarily on narrow gauge lines and branch lines where the relative flexibility of the lighter rails makes this practical.
Because the rails leading up to the facing-point end are not secured to the sleepers for several feet leading to the switch, and rail alignment across the gap is not positively enforced, these switches cannot be traversed at high speed and are thus not suitable for main line use.
An alternative arrangement is to use three rails (dual gauge), with the two tracks sharing the middle rail.
