Widescreen TVs are TVs that have a wider screen size than standard TVs.
This can also be used to counter-act the actions of some cable channels who attempt to show widescreen shows, often documentaries, that are filmed in 16:9 but are left horizontally compressed because they want to show the full frame but without fear of a backlash because of the "dreaded fl bars".
It is very possible for continual viewing of widescreen images to damage a TV by causing uneven wear on the phosphors.

A widescreen image is a film image with a greater aspect ratio than the ordinary 35 millimeter frame.
The aspect ratio of a standard 35 millimeter frame is around 1.37:1, although cinematographers may use only the part of the frame which will be visible on a television screen (which is 1.33:1 for standard television).
Widescreen TV Historically, consumer TVs have been 4:3 and since many U.S. TV viewers seem to prefer to see a TV screen completely filled with image, U.S. TV stations often show widescreen movies with sides truncated, using a technique called pan and scan.

Television - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some people argue that widescreen is actually a disadvantage when showing objects that are tall instead of panoramic, others say that natural vision is more panoramic than tall, and therefore widescreen is easier on the eye.
Furthermore, computer and laptop widescreen displays are in the 16:10 aspect ratio both physically in size and in pixel counts, and not in 16:9 of consumer televisions, leading to further complexity.
This was a result of widescreen computer display engineers' uninformed assumption that people viewing 16:9 content on their computer would prefer that an area of the screen be reserved for playback controls or subtitles, as opposed to viewing content full-screen.

Widescreen - TvWiki, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A widescreen image is a film or television image with a wider aspect ratio than the standard frame that developed during the classical Hollywood cinema.
One rationale for widescreen is that, since the human eye has a field of view that extends farther to the sides than it does above or below, a widescreen image makes more effective use of the field of view, thereby producing a more immersive viewing experience.
Widescreen TV Historically, consumer TVs have been 4:3 and since many U.S. TV viewers seem to prefer to see a TV screen completely filled with image, U.S. television networks often show widescreen movies with the sides truncated, using a technique called pan and scan.

 mb21 - ether.net - TV - Widescreen
True widescreen tv uses all of the transmitted picture area and is intended for viewers who have widescreen tv sets but, crucially, the set-top box decoders allow viewers with traditional 4:3 sets to choose between two ways of showing the widescreen picture on their sets.
They can see widescreen programmes letterboxed, with fl bars top and bottom, or they can fill their screen by 'zooming' in to the centre of the widescreen picture (this is known as 'centre cut-out').
Some sceptics still fail to see the point of widescreen, arguing that it is of no benefit to some types of programme but ultimately there is no denying that 16:9 is a more pleasing shape and that there is no programme which fails to benefit from being viewed on a larger screen.

NMEDIAC : The Widescreen Aesthetic in Online Advertising
Historically, widescreen processes were initially deployed by the fledgling film industry as part of the battery economic life preservers in the fight against television in the early 1950s.
To fully examine what widescreen means and how it became endowed with those meanings, it is useful to examine the film studies’ literature with regard to scholarship on widescreen, as well as criticism of the widescreen aesthetic in online content concerning both advertising and even video games.
Bazin and others prophesied that this lack of montage in widescreen films would create a new kind of cinematic experience — one where the filmmakers did not guide the spectator’s gaze, but rather viewers were liberated and free to roam about the wide visual field.

 Why Go Widescreen?
Widescreen is considered to be a more natural view for humans, more closely simulating the way we see the world than the "tunnel vision" view of 4:3.
However the inevitability of widescreen means that the move must be made sooner or later.
Widescreen provides more options for split-screen images; for example, two simultaneous camera views or devoting part of the screen to graphics.

When a programme is being transmitted in 4:3, such as archive programmes that were originally made in 4:3, the widescreen receiver will automatically switch to 4:3 and the viewer will experience small fl curtains to the left and right hand sides of the screen.

But when the widescreen version of a movie is shown on a big-screen television the loss of viewing field isn't so bad.
The widescreen version appears to be smaller on a TV set than a pan & scan version does, so it is NOT recommended that you view any widescreen version of a movie on a TV screen smaller than 19 inches.

Experiments with both 3D and widescreen in films had been occurring since the early 1920s, but it was the 50s that they really took off.
There can be no doubt that widescreen films convey much more dynamic imagery, with the wider aspect ratio working to enhance the dramatic impact of the film upon the viewer.

Widescreen televisions are about 1.78 times as wide as they are tall, or 16:9.
Like widescreen televisions, standard televisions with this feature could be designed to automatically detect whether content is anamorphic and avoid squeezing non-anamorphic content.
More frequently, they frame their shots for widescreen but include the extra film negative at the top and bottom, simply making sure to exclude such distractions as microphones, edges of sets, stagehands lying on the floor holding up props, etc. This is called "Soft Matte".

Now, the chain was conceding what cinephiles had argued for years: that widescreen was the superior way to watch a movie at home, even if it left fl bars at the top and bottom of your television screen.
Since the major complaint about widescreen DVDs is the smaller picture, super-sized TVs point the way toward nirvana: On a 55-incher, widescreen's fl bars are a minor irritation.
