Topic: Widescreen signaling

Widescreen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A widescreen image is a film, computer, or television image with a wider aspect ratio than the standard Academy frame developed during the classical Hollywood cinema era.
Widescreen was first widely used in the late 1920s in some shorts and newsreels, including Fox Grandeur News and Fox Movietone Follies of 1929, both released on May 26, 1929 in New York City in the Fox Grandeur process.
One rationale for widescreen is that, since the human eye has a field of view that extends farther to the sides than it does above or below, a widescreen image makes more effective use of the field of view, thereby producing a more immersive viewing experience.

Widescreen 16:9 video, such as from a 16:9 video camera, can be stored on the disc in anamorphic form, meaning the picture is squeezed horizontally to fit the standard 4:3 rectangle, then unsqueezed during playback.
Widescreen video can be letterboxed to 4:3 on expensive studio equipment before it's stored on the disc, or it can be stored in anamorphic form and letterboxed to 4:3 in the player.
A Dolby Surround signal can be played on any stereo system (or even a mono system), in which case the rear- and center-channel sounds remain mixed in with the left and right channels.

Widescreen signaling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In television technology, widescreen signaling (WSS) is a digital stream embedded in the TV signal describing qualities of the broadcast, in particular the intended aspect ratio of the image.
This can be used by a widescreen TV to switch to the correct display mode.
The signal is placed in line 23 and has 14 bits of information indicating:

 Video Glossary
A standard test signal that appears as a series of vertical rows of colour by which the chrominance and video levels of a camera's output or a recorded signal can be checked.
The structuring of the video signal whereby color and luminance signals are kept separate from one another using the color-subtraction method Y (luminance), B—Y (blue minus luminance) and R—Y (red minus luminance), with green derived from a combination.
Variation in the gain of the chrominance signal as the luminance signal on which it rides is varied from blanking to white level.

 SER FAQ: TVFAQ: PAL-plus
In order to compensate for the fact that 1/4 of the video lines are not used, which would deteriorate vertical resolution for the widescreen viewer, the missing vertical information has been coded into the fl lines in a manner as to be nearly invisible on a 4:3 receiver (you see some dark blue).
Signaling bits from which the receiver can conclude whether the transmission is 4:3/16:9/PAL-plus and adapt the display format accordingly.
These are mostly widescreen sets without any PAL-plus processing at all, but they allow switching of the display format between 4:3 and 16:9.

 Howstuffworks "How Computer Monitors Work"
For widescreen LCD monitors, the aspect ratio is 16:9 (or sometimes 16:10 or 15:9).
Widescreen LCD displays are useful for viewing DVD movies in widescreen format, playing games and displaying multiple windows side by side.
TMDS takes the signal from the video adapter, determines the resolution and refresh rate that the monitor is using, and spreads the signal out over the available bandwidth to optimize the data transfer from computer to monitor.

The process: The two input signals to an FM modulator are the baseband signal (video or one of two audio channels) and the carrier frequency (a constant amplitude and constant frequency signal).
A large amplitude signal will cause a large shift in the carrier frequency, etc. The rate of shift (how fast the carrier is changed from one frequency to another) is determined by the frequency of the baseband information.
Ghosting is caused by the broadcast signal travelling to your TV through various obstacles, for example hills or tall buildings, and your antenna picks up the original TV signal along with signals reflected by the obstacles.

For a display, a small change in amplitude when the signal level is small produces a change in the display brightness level, but the same change in amplitude at a high level will not produce the same magnitude of brightness change.
During the horizontal blanking interval, the video signal is at the blank level so as not to display the electron beam when it sweeps back from the right to the left side of the CRT screen.
Signal-to-noise ratio is the magnitude of the signal divided by the amount of unwanted stuff that is interfering with the signal (the noise).

Active Format Description solves a troublesome problem in the transition from conventional 4:3 display devices to widescreen 16:9 displays, and also addresses the variety of aspect ratios that have been used over the years by the motion picture industry to produce feature films.
In some scenarios, lack of a signaling method translates to restrictions in the ability of the source device to deliver certain otherwise desirable output formats.
Letterboxed widescreen video in NTSC should not be coded as 4:3, but should be coded into a 16:9 coded frame.

2006 Notebook PC Market Dominated by Widescreen Displays, Says DisplaySearch | Tekrati Research News
Widescreen uptake in the U.S. consumer market is outpacing penetration in commercial purchases by large corporations.
A milestone was achieved in Q1'06 when worldwide penetration of widescreen notebook PCs surpassed 50%, a stark contrast to just one year ago when widescreen notebook PC shipments were less than 35% of the total worldwide notebook PC market.
By contrast, in the 14.x" group, wide was introduced in Q3'04 and will overtake standard aspect ratio displays this year, signaling increased acceptance of wide products by both the consumer and commercial markets.

Note: A flipper is not the same as a disc with a widescreen version on one side and a pan and scan version or supplements on the other.
In this case, the actual size of the images on your TV are the same for a letterbox version and a full-frame version, unless the pan and scan technique is used to zoom in (which cuts off part of the picture).
In more other words, letterboxing covers over the part of the picture that was also covered in the theater, or it allows the entire widescreen picture to be visible for movies wider than 1.85, in which case the letterboxed picture is smaller and has less detail than a pan and scan version would.
