Widewuto or Waidewut, legendary late 10th century king of the Prussi[?], ruled along with his brother, the priest Bruteno[?] in the area known as Prussia, according to sagas recorded in later times.
According to the sagas, St. Adalbert of Prague (died in 997) was martyred by the Prussians under Widewuto and his brother, after which the holy oak of the Prussians was felled by Adalbert, Bishop of Ermeland, with an axe given to him by Christ himself.
After seeing the power of their gods destroyed, the Prussians became Christian.

Thus, the Germans created a folk etymology for the land (in German commonly called Hockerland) traced to a King Hoggo.

Das Ermland war die größte der preußischen Diözesen und reichte im Norden bis an den Pregel, im Süden bis zum Omulef-Fluß und vom Frischen Haff bis an die Litauische Grenze.
Der Name „Ermland“ geht zurück auf Ermia, Gattin von Warmio, des neunten Sohnes von König Widewuto, und dieser Warmio ist der Namensgeber für den prußischen Gau Warmien und das heutige polnische Warmia.
Nachdem der zunächst ausersehene Ordensbruder Heinrich von Strittberg verzichtet hatte, der statt dessen 1254 den Bischofsstuhl des Samlands einnahm, wurde Anselmus, aus einem Land der Krone Böhmens und vielleicht aus Schlesien stammend, 1250 zum ersten Bischof des Ermlands ernannt und geweiht.
