The percentage is calculated with respect to the width of the generated box's containing block.
Calculation of the shrink-to-fit width is similar to calculating the width of a table cell using the automatic table layout algorithm.
In cases where an explicit width or height is set and the other dimension is auto, applying a minimum or maximum constraint on the auto side can cause a conflict between honoring the explicit dimension and honoring the (implicit) aspect ratio.

Re: A table with fixed width?
One approach is to evenly apportion the cell's minimum and maximum width between these columns, another is to weight the apportioning according to the contributions from cells that don't span multiple columns.
This allows the widths of nested tables to be assigned and hence in turn the column widths of such tables.
Note that pixel values for width and height refer to screen pixels, and should be multiplied by an appropriate factor when rendering to very high resolution devices such as laser printers.

 Stereo Width Controllers
Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, it would be nice to vary the width of the 'sound stage' when listening to stereo recordings.
Width controllers used to be quite popular with listeners wearing headphones, because the normal image is too wide when each reproducer is playing directly into its respective ear.
The idea for stereo width control is not new, and the circuits reproduced here are adaptions from a number of sources.

Text and Margin Width Influences   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
There were 10 trials for each combination of text width (4, 6, or 8 inches) and margin space (0,.5, 1, or 1.5 inches), not including the largest margin sizes for the 8-inch text width.
The highest ratings were given to the 4-inch text width with 0.5,1, and 1.5-inch margin spaces, which also showed the highly efficient possessing.
Results indicated that, by itself, text width does not influence readability; however, there was a significant interaction between text width and margin width.

Curve of constant width - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In geometry, a curve of constant width is a convex planar shape whose width, measured by the distance between two opposite parallel tangent lines to its boundary, is the same regardless of the direction of those two parallel lines.
One defines the width of the curve in a given direction to be the perpendicular distance between the tangents perpendicular to that direction.
The circle is obviously a curve of constant width.

Width Estimation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The first procedure developed for estimating defect width was to assume the width is directly related to the number of sensors in which an axial slope exceeded a slope threshold criterion.
The sources of the unexplained width variation are represented in the figure below and documented in Table of Width Estimation Error Components.
This tier-based width is equivalent to slicing the MFL signal surface at a specified amplitude and calculating the maximum width in the resulting planar surface region.

Integer that specifies the width of the object in pixels or as a percentage.
If you specify the width property of an img, but not the height property, the resulting height of the img is sized proportionally to the specified width property and the actual height, in pixels, of the source image file.
If you specify the width property of an img, and the height and width of the image in the source file are identical, the height of the image matches the width.

Dunlop Tires | Care & Maintenance | Rim width and aspect ratio
To accurately measure the width of a tire, the tire must be mounted on a rim.
Since a tire's section width is larger if the tire is mounted on a wide rim, and smaller if it is mounted on a narrow rim, each tire is measured on a specific rim width.
Aspect ratios are expressed in section height as a percentage of section width in two-digit numbers (80, 70, 60) and are often referred to as a tire's series.

Note that this method of determining column widths is not exact when you use other characters, such as spaces, dollar-signs, parentheses, and so on.

A fluid layout is where the layout's dimensions (typically the width) is based on the width of the browser.
Well you could write up some elaborate javascript that monitors the width of your variously fluid elements and when the window is resized too narrow, the javascript assigns a static width to either the element(s) in question, or the entire layout.
Applying a global width lock (locking the width of the body element, for example) as soon as the first fluid element hits its limit wouldn't be as efficient as other elements won't be able to shrink to their limits, resulting in a page that doesn't go as narrow as possible before applying the width lock.

How to Use CSS to Solve min-width Problems in Internet Explorer - WebReference.com (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab1.tamu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
My method requires additional divs to control the width and min-width but I believe this is a small price to pay for a non-JavaScript method that works cross-browser (even on Mac IE5).
The general idea is to use a div with a left border width set to the same value as the minimum width.
Reducing the width of the browsers window will shrink the text width to a minimum but will not shrink the border.

The width of the table is then the greater of the value of the 'width' property for the table element and the sum of the column widths (plus cell spacing or borders).
If the 'table' or 'inline-table' element's 'width' property has a computed value (W) other than 'auto', the property's value as used for layout is the greater of W and the minimum width required by all the columns plus cell spacing or borders (MIN).
The left border width of the table is half of the first cell's collapsed left border, and the right border width of the table is half of the last cell's collapsed right border.

Reducing the browser window will now reduce the overall width until the min-width is reached and there it will stop, but this causes another problem.
If, instead of using the left border width to control the min-width, we use the left padding width we will not have to specify a color for any of the divs.
