Wien airlines was established by the most famous bush pilot in Alaska history, Noel Wien.
Many of the rivers are used by floaters to travel through the park and allows them a spectacular opportunity to view some of the varied wildlife and scenery the park has to offer.
The Koyukuk River on which Bettles is located, was the traditional dividing line between the Inupiak Eskimos and the Athabaskan Indians.

 Airlines N to Z
1936: From Northern Air Transport as (Noel) Wien Consolidated Airlines, later (19??) as Wien Alaska Airlines.
Operated after (I believe Zimmerly Air and Empire of Lewiston ID) merged in the early '50s, was owned by Nick Bez, a fishing industry tycoon in Seattle who needed a tax write-off.
I do not know where their aircraft came from, but AMR Services (a then sister of American Airlines) provided most everything else, Flight Planning, Ground Handling, Fuel, etc. It ran out of money (perhaps from poor marketing) and shut down within a year from startup.

Ray Petersen, president of NCA, and Sigurd Wien, head of Wien Air Alaska, agreed to merge in 1967 into Wien Consolidated Airlines.
By the mid-1950s, Brooks River was being advertised as one of the world's top fishing spots.
Excellent for silver salmon, steelhead, rainbow trout and grayling, it was developed on the Brooks River and is widely used on Katmai streams.

I was hired in Jan. 1969 in YUM with Air West.
I transferred to MRY in June of 1965 and stayed there through the Air West merger, acquiring a wife (Carol) in the process.

 Merrill Wien
He is now in the flooring business and is on many company boards, including Alaska Airlines and his business and civic knowledge is much in demand.
He spent the last six months in Air Rescue Squadron flying Grumman SA-16 Albatross based at Ladd Field in Fairbanks, Alaska, and was released from active duty in September 1956.
After the Air Force, he returned to flying for Wien Airlines as a DC-3 captain, and also logged time in the C-46, DC-4, 749 Constellation, Fairchild F-27, Boeing 737 and 727.

Richard Wien, the son of pioneer Fairbanks aviator Noel Wien, said flying was in his blood, describing heading off to Weeks Field after school when schoolmates went off to play basketball.
The first Fairbanks recipients of the FAA's new Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award each have spent more than 50 years flying, with several first taking wing before they were out of high school.

He flew C-119's (Fairchild) about 2000 hours and spent the last six months in Air Rescue Squadron flying Grumman SA-16 Albatross based at Ladd Field in Fairbanks, Alaska.
With flight time in a wide array of aircraft, some of the other aircraft types Merrill has spent a significant amount of time piloting are the: Nordyn Norseman, P-38, Grumman Widgeon, Broussard, T-28, Twin Beech, DC-3, DC-4, C-46, 749 Constellation, Fairchild F-27, Cessna 170, 185 and 195 and the Boeing 737's and 727's.
This was an opportunity to fly many airplanes he had never flown.
