The town and harbour are situated at the mouth of the Wieprza river.
The foundation took place in 1271 through Witzlaw II from Rügen. After the decay of the settlement and the reestablishment, it became a member of the Hansa League in 1312 and had in the 16th century important trade with Scandinavia and Poland.
With rough sea and wind from west it is to be remained impossible being in the Wieprza because of the quay wall.

Mya were determined in the coastal waters, including estuaries of the Parseta, Wieprza, Slupia, Lupawa, and Leba rivers and Wladyslawowo.
  The abundance of this mollusc in the estuary of Slupia (Ustka) was 100-fold higher than in the estuary of Wieprza (Darlowo) and Lupawa (Rowy) and the wet weight was 11-fold higher, respectively.
Mya arenaria plays an important role in the monitoring of benthos of the Baltic Sea, constitutes a food base of animals (fish), and takes part in the process of purification of waters of the coast stretch studied (biofiltration, biosedimentation).

In the earliest historical records, the area around the mouth of the Wieprza river was called Terra Dirlova.
This name was probably taken from a wooden stronghold which was situated in the area at that time.
Construction of the church was meant as his thanks for the salvation of his ship during a sea storm when he was approaching Darłowo with his pirated booty.

Darłowo Lighthouse was built at the base of the eastern breakwater on the estuary of the River Wieprza into the Baltic Sea.
Once there, take the road for the drawbridge, and then along the eastern bank of the Wieprza out towards the coast.
You can also reach the lighthouse from Darłówek Zachodni over the drawbridge, of course if it doesn’t happen to be pulled in to allow shipping in and out of the port.

A castle from the 13th-14th centuries with a mighty gate tower and its own system of fortifications erected in the Wieprza river bifurcation reminds of both the times of the Baltic Sea pirates and the Hanseatic rule.
Another town on the Slovincian sea-coast is Koszalin, lying 10 kilometers inland.
The Hanseatic route brings us to Slawno, a small town situated 30 kilometers east of Koszalin, at the mouth of River Moszczenica which is a tributary of River Wieprza.

Located on the east side of the entrance to the Wieprza River in Darlowo, a small town halfway between Swinoujscie and Gdynia.
