	Wieringen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Wieringen (population: 8,451 in 2004) is a municipality consisting of the former island of Wieringen in the northwest of the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland.
		The landscape of Wieringen is not all flat: it is characterised by dam ramparts of boulder clay, which were formed during the Saale Ice Age.
		Wieringen and Texel may have met as opposite banks of the Maresdeop (which name may mean "morass deep"), which was then an ordinary river with banks of permanent land (but perhaps a large river, as it is called a "deep").

	Capture of Damiate by WIERINGEN, Cornelis Claesz van
		Wieringen was probably the pupil of Hendrick Cornelisz Vroom (the founder of European marine painting); he ranks as his best and closest follower.
		Wieringen's multicoloured paintings are more ornamental, his waves and whitecaps more schematic than Vroom's, and his skies (apart from those in his graphics) are little more than decorative backdrops.
		The Capture of Damiate was commissioned by Haarlem's St Hadrian Civic Guard, and it was originally mounted as an overmantel in the company's headquarters (a few years afterwards officers of the company commissioned Frans Hals to paint their group portrait).

		On the south-side there is the polder Wieringermeer, and in between is a canal, the Amstelmeerkanaal.
		The canal would be made much wider and debouch into a lake along the southside of Wieringen reaching to the IJsselmeer.

		Separated from the mainland by a large body of water formed by a flood in the early part of the 13th century, Wieringen remained an island until 1930 when the Wieringermeerpolder was formed.
		Another part of the Wieringen inlet was reclaimed in 1610 (Wieringerwaard) while the inlet between the land tongue and the Wieringerwaard wasn't reclaimed until 1845 (Anna Paulownapolder).
