Wifebeater (slang) - Education - Information - Educational Resources - Encyclopedia - Music
Wife beater, also wifebeater, and sometimes abbreviated as simply beater, is a slang term used in the United States to refer to a tank top style shirt when worn as a sole, outer layer (as opposed to being worn as an undershirt).
The origin of the term is from the belief that the shirts are worn predominantly by men who beat their wives; fl tank tops were often worn by Ike Turner, a notorious abuser of his wife Tina.
Use of the term wifebeater to describe an article of clothing (as opposed to its literal use) is relatively new, perhaps originating as early as the 1970s.

Growing up in New Jersey, wifebeaters were called “Guinney T’s” (not sure of spelling) in reference to the Italians that were known to wear them.
I used to call these tanks wifebeaters, but since I was an abused wife (I am not anymore; I am out of that trechorous situation), I find it very offensive.

Just about everyone under thirty has heard this nasty little bit of slang, and we've all asked "how?!" and "why?!?" The term first cropped up a few years ago, with the first written citation dating from 1996, just as the sleeveless athletic shirts were making their fashion comeback.
The slang seems to have come from a healthy sense of self-mockery, as teens across the nation slipped into something comfortable, looked at themselves in the mirror, and said "Ughh.
However, many slang experts argue that, far from glamorizing domestic violence, this tongue-in-cheek name mocks the self-conscious machismo of the upper-class teen as he struggles to evoke the blue-collar image of another time and place.

To countless people, ''wifebeater'' is not just a word, and cannot be appropriated as gays have done with ''queer.'' People don't allow themselves to be beaten any more than they allow themselves to be raped.
