Topic: Wiggle Diskette

In the News (Sat 28 Nov 09)

  MIRAGE DOUBLE-SIDED DRIVE CONVERSION
The floppy diskette has inside its plastic case a thin round piece of plastic film, which is coated on both sides with an iron oxide mixture similar to that found on audio or video tape.
As the diskette spins (driven by a motor in the disk drive) the head, which is mounted on a movable arm, puts down the digital data onto the diskette in concentric circles.
When the diskette is originally "formatted" magnetic markers are laid down by the head so it knows where to go on the diskette to put down the data.

Lockergnome's Problem Solvers -> Floppy Stuck In Drive
If so, in my experience the most likely reason for a "stuck" floppy diskette is because the little sliding door or "shutter" which exposes magnetic media to the floppy diskette drive has become jammed open and will not close.
It might be possible to remove the floppy diskette from the floppy diskette drive by using a small pair of needle-nose pliers to securely grasp the floppy diskette and pull it straight out, but there does exist the possibility that this procedure will damage the floppy diskette drive.
Now your friend can copy the contents of the floppy diskette to a new one or to the computer's hard disk drive and discard the old one.

A PS/2 GUI Reference Diskette would have to allow for a mouse not being present (not like the Trackpoint, which is *always* installed on those models of Thinkpads) to do keyboard input just as well.
Limited to a listing for only the floppy drive (which will hold the Reference Diskette anyway) there still could be the chance of a "file listbox" to give access to other drives or better way of refreshing a dialog box showing a list of files for the type "ADF".
For a GUI Reference Diskette I don't think the serial mouse support should be ignored; There may be a case where the PS/2 mouse has been replaced with a serial port (always present on a PS/2) version.
