Wigwag - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wigwag is the nickname given to a type of early 20th century railroad grade crossing signal, so named due to the pendulum-like motion it used to signal the approach of a train.
One is a lower-quadrant signal at a private crossing in Casmalia, California along Union Pacific's coastal route and the second is an upper-quadrant at a far-flung rural crossing in Delhi, Colorado on the BNSF Railway.
The wigwags at the crossing that mark the historic location of the western terminus of the BNSF in Richmond, California became pawns in a fight over local control in 2003.

Wigwag (magazine) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The legend of Wigwag's founding by a group of young exiles from The New Yorker - an exodus which followed The New Yorker's acquisition by Conde Nast and Conde Nast's subsequent dismissal of The New Yorker's great editor William Shawn - attracted an enormous amount of attention to its launch and early publication.
One of the most significant contributors to Wigwag's identity was its art director, the distinguished illustrator and designer Paul Davis.
Many have observed that Wigwag's editorial and design innovations under Kaplen and Davis were later adopted by Tina Brown and implemented at The New Yorker when she became its editor.

Wigwag War / Point Richmond residents fight to save artifacts from the low-tech era
They're wigwags, relics from the age of the Model T that have become an endangered species, with only 100 sets left in the United States and only two in the Bay Area, railroad buffs say.
Some residents say the wigwags should be saved because they are artifacts in a historic setting and the crossing is safe, with the trains typically moving through at very slow speeds.
The wigwag war has been going on for years, and the railroad considered it settled three years ago when it received a decision from the California Public Utilities Commission that the crossing should be equipped with gates.

The plaintiff testified that before she drove upon the track she also observed a wigwag signal which was equipped with an electric bell, and that the signal was not moving nor did the bell ring.
This question depends upon whether or not the defendant owed the plaintiff a duty to warn her in that particular manner when she was approaching the tracks at, and with the intention of crossing at, another crossing.
Upon this point the plaintiff, to support her contention that the defendant was under a duty to warn her by the wigwag signal and electric bell, contended first that it was installed between the highway crossing and the street crossing where she intended to cross.
