In traditional wikis, every page has two representations: the form in which it is displayed (usually HTML/XHTML versions, rendered by a web browser) and the form in which it is edited (a simplified markup language, the style and syntax of which varies from wiki to wiki, called "wikitext").
While most wiki communities shun mandatory registration procedures, virtually all large wiki engines provide some way to restrict users who consistently violate community rules, and Wikinfo is one of the few requiring registration.
Adminstrators of wikis can also ban a user from editing, which can be accomplished by banning their particular IP address or their username.

The Fishbowl: In Defense of Wiki Markup
The more power you put in the markup language, the more people are going to be wanking around with the precise arrangement of angle-brackets that will make their paragraphs step from left-to-right in pixel-perfect harmony… in lieu of saying something.
I do think wiki markup is a bit of a pain though, but I can't think of anything else that actually does the job at this point.
Wiki markup is an improvement in both these areas over HTML, but, given the example of Contribute, true WYSIWYG editing should not be that hard to do.

Note that the first level is actually indicated using H2, so that it doesn't appear at the same level as the page heading (which conceptually titles the section of that Wiki page).
There are two forms of table markup supported.
Other paragraph markup applies to both styles, meaning that if six or more columns of whitespace precedes the first line of the table, it will be centered, and if any whitespace at all precedes first line, it will occur in a blockquote.

JSPWiki: Wiki Markup Development   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
It might not be a bad idea to have the markup result in a element: some text instead of using a deprecated element.
Any thing that has more than one character to indicate its markup is an overkill, I think an editor(one who edits) should be able to understand the text even in editing mode and having markups in between reduces his chances of understanding and attempting to edit other author contributions.
An obvious markup would be to use 2 percent signs for inline css, and 3 percent signs for block css.

There are four properties of traditional wiki systems that are not desirable in the context of the classroom: all content is modifiable by any user, all content is public, simultaneous edits are allowed but not successful, and the wiki is forever evolving.
Wiki Paradigm According to Ward Cunningham, originator of the wiki paradigm, a wiki is "the simplest online database that could possibly work." [1] This statement expresses one of the goals of the wiki paradigm, which is to provide user interface functionality in the simplest way possible.
In addition to the wiki markup insertion buttons and the editable textarea, there are two checkboxes for changing the modifiability and visibility attributes for the page.

It unnatural if you have to speak 5 different wiki markup languages to discuss 5 topics on 5 different wiki engines, so it is less problematic to migrate to a common basic markup standard than to keep multiple markups.
Any minimalist wiki markup should be very, very minimalistic and should also provide a method for extending the syntax and indicating this.
One aspect of a markup standard that appears to not yet have been considered is the specific intent of the use of the wiki technology.

Quickiwiki, Swiki, Twiki, Zwiki and the Plone Wars Wiki as a PIM and Collaborative Content Tool   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Wiki pages are controlled — created, linked, edited, deleted, moved, renamed, and so on — by a programming or scripting language, and stored either as plain ASCII text files or in an external relational database, such as MySQL, Oracle, or PostgreSQL.
Wikis that implement page-version control may also allow page rollback, usually via the History view; sometimes you will see the word "diffs" used for version display, which means differences, a short form of the software utility of the same name.
Wiki was subsequently extended by some clone derivatives to include more explicit database management (server-side add-on), such as RCS (Revision Control System) [http://www.gnu.org/software/rcs/rcs.html], CVS (Concurrent Versions System) [http://www.cvshome.org/], or ported/integrated into larger CMS systems (Python Zope) [http://www.zope.org].

The advantage of this is that all the layout markup that pollutes html tables and their wiki reformulations would be kept out of the picture.

Wiki Syntax, or the hopefully simpler markup that is used in WikiPages instead of HTML.
To get away from philosophy, many wikis have to change their local syntax to fit their local users' needs, such as adding LatexInWiki or conforming to pre-existing documentation markup or pre-existing text formatting conventions in that community.
That is simply because each wiki will structure itself as it wants; the complications of mapping an ArchivingNews wiki to a PatternLanguage wiki is too much to consider.

We use a wiki at my day job, and I'm sure glad I didn't have to teach my whole company (which includes electrical and mechanical engineers, physicists, salesfolk, skilled technicians, and admin assistants, not just software geeks) HTML in order to be able to use it.
The fact that Wiki supports MarkUp at all is an indication that format and layout is important to being able to convey meaning and ideas.
The wiki markup isn't a presentational markup, it is a semantic markup.
